History
In 1956 a handful of Hamiltonian locals decided they wanted their own university. It seemed reasonable. New Zealand had four universities that had been established in the main centres since the end of last century.

Research
The Research & Enterprise Office supports the University of Waikato's research activities and the process of creating value from research discoveries and innovation. We work with both University researchers and external partners, including government, industry and community organisations, to extend research capability and broaden partnership opportunities that foster collaborative research, the implementation of research findings, and knowledge and technology transfer.

We have a number of support services available to our students, including study and learning support, career development services and health and wellbeing services.
Housing services
The University of Waikato provides accommodation services to assist you in matters relating to your accommodation during your university study. We can help you find accommodation suited to your needs, provide advice on tenancy matters, plus lists of houses, flats, rooms and boarding options.
Accommodation in Hamilton is really affordable, and there are many options to choose from. Choosing the right accommodation option for you is an important part of undertaking university study. We have a wide range of accommodation options. You can choose to live on campus in one of our halls of residence, or you can choose to live off campus in private accommodation.
Library services
A wide range of formats are collected and shelved within the general and focussed collections. The catalogue location information will tell you where to find specific items in our libraries.

The University network allows staff, students and guests to use wired or wireless connections.
Medical services
As a Waikato student based in Hamilton, you have access to low-cost consultations and prescriptions if you register with our on-campus Student Health Service.
There's also a Health Centre on the Tauranga campuses but there's no need to register for the service.

Our main campus is located in the vibrant, multicultural city of Hamilton. On campus, you'll find a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and a number of services and facilities, including our state-of-the-art student centre, fantastic sporting facilities, a number of cafes and eateries, car parking and subsidised bus services.
Sports facilities
Offering a range of excellent facilities, including New Zealand’s largest university sports fields, a vast network of sports clubs and events, and a number of high performance programmes and scholarships, there are heaps of ways to get involved in sport at Waikato!
