In 1956 a handful of Hamiltonian locals decided they wanted their own university. It seemed reasonable. New Zealand had four universities that had been established in the main centres since the end of last century.

The Research & Enterprise Office supports the University of Waikato's research activities and the process of creating value from research discoveries and innovation. We work with both University researchers and external partners, including government, industry and community organisations, to extend research capability and broaden partnership opportunities that foster collaborative research, the implementation of research findings, and knowledge and technology transfer.

Housing services

The University of Waikato provides accommodation services to assist you in matters relating to your accommodation during your university study. We can help you find accommodation suited to your needs, provide advice on tenancy matters, plus lists of houses, flats, rooms and boarding options.

Accommodation in Hamilton is really affordable, and there are many options to choose from. Choosing the right accommodation option for you is an important part of undertaking university study. We have a wide range of accommodation options. You can choose to live on campus in one of our halls of residence, or you can choose to live off campus in private accommodation.

Library services

A wide range of formats are collected and shelved within the general and focussed collections. The catalogue location information will tell you where to find specific items in our libraries.

ICT services

When you are fully enrolled, we'll set you up with a user name and computer account. You can save assignments and notes on your account and you'll be able to access it wherever you log in on campus. Your user name is also your university email address. There are student computer labs throughout the University and a wireless network.

Medical services

Public Health Services are publicly funded services that are free or low cost to New Zealand citizens, residents and some visa holders. Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand.

Student Life

Campus life

Waikato has the most beautiful campus in the country. You'll find Waikato has a laid-back and easy atmosphere and all our first-class facilities are in one location, building a strong sense of community. Students meet for coffee by the lakes, chill out on the lawns or play touch rugby on the fields. There's plenty of parking and buses leave campus every 15 minutes.

Sports facilities

Sports opportunities on campus are endless and cater for people wanting to socialise and have fun, through to the elite. A large number of clubs are based on campus, including the University rugby, netball, hockey, rowing, soccer, cricket and ski clubs.Sports facilities include:
