History
Niigata University has a long history and rich tradition as an institution, with origins going back some 150 years. Since our inauguration as a national university in 1949 under the new university system, the university has played an important role to provide higher education opportunities for people from inside and outside Japan.

In order to meet accountability requirements demanded to universities in recent years, and as a part of industrial-academic co-operation and contribution to local communities, NUAR (Niigata University Academic Repository) was introduced

Student services
The Program for Exchange Students at Niigata University admits international students from partner universities with an exchange agreement. The program offers courses for Japanese language and society as well as courses covering various specialties. The program aims to help students acquire knowledge and deepen their understanding of our country. It also aims to strengthen cooperation and partnership between Niigata University and its partner universities.
Housing services
International House, located on Niigata University's Ikarashi Campus, is a residence for international students and researchers. It is for housing those new to Japan, and in particular those students who have come to Niigata University through an inter-university exchange arrangement. Numbers are limited, and the period for residence is one year. After leaving International House, residence options include private apartments or similar in the vicinity of the university. Most of the enrolled international students live in these apartments.
Campus life
Niigata City is a beautiful port city with a population of about 800,000. Although the city allows people to lead their lives with comfort and convenience being a great domestic and international transportation hub, Japan's pristine landscape can still be found and traditional culture remains untouched.
