The genesis of the University of Macau (UM) dates back to March 1981 when its predecessor, the private University of East Asia (UEA), was co-founded by Mr Wong King Keung, Mr Edward Woo Pak Hay, and Mr Peter Eng Yuk Lun, on a plot of land leased by the local government to Ricci Island West. The founding of UEA signified the beginning of modern higher education in Macao.
Adopting a problem-oriented approach, UM devotes its resources to research areas that reflect the university’s strengths. At the same time, it actively establishes world-class research platforms to promote interdisciplinary research, especially collaboration between liberal arts fields and science fields, in order to gain a leadership status and an international reputation in these fields. UM also encourages entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer in order to enhance the social impact of its research. UMTEC Limited and Zhuhai UM Science & Technology Research Institute vigorously support industry-academia collaboration and actively promote commercialisation of research results and cultivation of new industries.
The University of Macau Student Union (UMSU) is a social organization with independent legal personality established under the laws of Macau. All graduate and undergraduate students of our school are members of the association. In the spirit of democratic self-government, the Association promotes the development of students ' "benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, knowledge, and trust" ; the Association serves as a bridge between the school and the students to cultivate their unity and sense of belonging to the University of Macau.
There are ten residential colleges (RCs) on the campus. Students from different majors and backgrounds and in different years of study are arranged to live in the same RCs. Such a living arrangement enables the students to organise and participate in various kinds of activities together; to receive education outside of the classroom and achieve well-rounded development; and to grow into exemplary graduates with a cross-cultural perspective, a strong sense of social responsibility, good communication skills, and team spirit.
