History
The Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Reggio Calabria, established on December 6, 1967, were the core founding of the Università di Reggio Calabria. The acknowledgement comes with the Decree of the President of the Republic on June 17, 1968, which marks the birth of the Libero Istituto Universitario di Architettura (IUSA) .
Education
The University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria (UNIRC acronym), was founded in 1968. It combines a commitment to research and teaching in the six departments:
- Architecture–dArTe;
- Heritage-Architecture
- Urbanism;
- Agriculture;
- Law, Economics and Human Sciences;
- Civil, Energy, Environmental and Material Engineering;
- Information Engineering, Infrastructures, and Sustainable Energy.
Research
The 77 active laboratories at the Università Mediterranea operate in the Departments to support the activities of scientific and industrial research, experimental development and educational activities. They represent a vital sector in the overall economy of the university system that involves other universities, research institutions, public administrations, associations and companies.

Housing services
The Mediterranea offers its students two facilities for comfortable accommodation:
- The Residenza Universitaria in Via Manfroce - 49 studios flat, able to accommodate about 100 students, distributed in double and quadruple rooms. Each accommodation consists of a bedroom, a study, a bathroom and a kitchen. It has a study and relax room, a library equipped with an audio / video system.
- The Residenza Universitaria in Via Roma - It has 50 beds in single and double rooms as well as four totally accessible single rooms. The rooms are spread over four floors each with a study room, a dining-relaxation area, a kitchen for collective use. All rooms are reached by the WiFi-UNIRC service.
Library services
The Università Mediterranea houses libraries and reference work can be carried out using the system “Unique Catalogue on line”. This system enables students to research the bibliographic material and publications in possess of the University libraries and expands the information services offered to the academic community (students, teachers, staff) as well as to external users.
ICT services
The entire university has wireless broadband coverage.
Campus life
- The University has recently established the University College, which is located near the campus, not far from the historic city center, and manages accommodation.
- The function of the College is not only to provide accommodation for the students who are entitled to it but also to organize events and services that promote the social and cultural integration of students and their active partecipation in university life, not only in their educational commitments but also in their recreational time.
Sports facilities
Located on the campus of the Mediterranea there is a gym called the “Centro Fitness di Ateneo”, situated below the Aula Magna of the University “Antonio Quistelli”. It has a training area of over 350 square metres and is provided with an extensive range of equipment, locker rooms with services, and can be accessed both from the campus and from the city. The campus also has a five-a-side football field and an outdoor volleyball court.
Student clubs
These university Students’ associations and groups are active, often linked by a network of different groups throughout the country and even abroad, which, through their activities, help to cement the local student community in a global context, while preserving its southern identity and characteristics, such as friendly hospitality, which combines with a world in which all distances have been eliminated by faster transport and more and more inclusive media.
