History
IU Northwest is the result of growth and change that began in 1921 when the university offered its first formal classes in Lake County as part of a program sponsored by the Gary Public School System.

University Ranking
Student services
The Student Government Association represents students and the IU Northwest campus through their involvement in campus committees and at Board of Trustees meetings. Elected officers of Student Government serve on different administrative committees throughout the year. They also allocate Student Activity funds to other student organizations on campus. Officers are expected to attend regularly scheduled meetings and are given a wide variety of responsibilities and leadership positions throughout their term in office.

Medical services
The IU Northwest Campus Health and Wellness Center Clinic is made possible through the College of Health and Human Services. It is an organization of health care professionals who are committed to improving the health and well-being of the IU Northwest campus community. We deliver high quality, affordable health care and through health promotion and illness prevention activities.
Campus life
- We are located in Gary, Indiana, approximately 30 miles southeast of Chicago and 10 miles from the Indiana Dunes National Park, in an area of the state affectionately known as the region.
- Our 42-acre campus includes a dedicated student center and eight academic buildings, including our latest addition, the ultramodern $45 million Arts & Sciences Building. We also offer plenty of green space for outdoor study and play when the weather is right.
- A busy hub, the Moraine Student Center features the RedHawk Café, serving breakfast and lunch―and plenty of space to eat, study, or chill.
