History
Southern Federal University (SFedU), along with Siberian Federal University, was founded as the pilot project of new federal universities establishments. Currently, there are only ten federal universities in Russia.
Education
SFedU applicants can pick and choose from a range of Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate degree programs in a broadest range of sciences and humanities: history, philosophy, art, economics, law, psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science. Each program contains a number of core courses, but apart from them students can choose between elective courses. It is also possible to apply for several programs.
Research
The University is one of the leading research centres in Russia. It creates the right conditions for research, both applied and basic, supports all disciplines, from the humanities to sciences and natural sciences.
The development of scientific and innovative potential of the university is carried out in various research areas, which correspond to priority trends in science and technology. SFedU stands out from among Russian higher education institutions also due to the highest number of grants awarded.
The university comprises a number of actively developing scientific schools conducting interdisciplinary research in a wide range of areas - natural sciences, engineering and humanities.

Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report presents all the top universities from the U.S. and 60 other countries around the world. They measure the rate of students going to their second year of studies, as well as the rate of students who graduate. It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Student services
SFedU has well-established international links with universities and partner organization. Our international outlook is strongly expressed in active collaboration with international foundations and programs.
Housing services
A large proportion of SFedU students live in student residence halls in one of the two campuses. Both Rostov Campus and Taganrog Campus are well-equipped and have all the modern facilities, such as reading halls and computer rooms, laundry services, fitness facilities and sports grounds, cafeterias.
Campus life
The campus of SFU in the city of Taganrog is located in the center of the town and consists of 7 educational buildings, 7 dormitories, a canteen, a library, a student club, sports facilities (4 sports grounds, 5 gyms) within walking distance.

Student clubs
At Southern Federal University, it is currently one of the priorities to promote student self-government. SFedU administration holds the view that student self-government makes it easier to solve certain university problems, as well as helps students to become more responsible, sensible, independent-minded and socially aware.
Student self-government is effected through SFedU Students Union. It is made up of members of smaller students unions, such as the faculties, institutes and campuses unions. SFedU Students Union is capable of affecting the universitys policy due to its representation in the Academic Council. It is the Unions current aim to increase such representation.
Quality of 18 programs of the Southern Federal University were confirmed by international accreditation bodies: Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute (ACQUIN), Agency for Quality Assurance (AQAS) and European Council for Business Education (ECBE).
