Doshisha University

History

144 years have passed since Doshisha was founded by one of the foremost educators of the Meiji period, Joseph Hardy Neesima. Immediately after returning to Japan, Neesima founded Doshisha Eigakko (English Academy) in Kyoto.

Education

The purpose of founding Doshisha Academy was not only to equip students with a general knowledge of the English language, but also to cultivate in students virtue, enhance their integrity, and help them discipline their mind. In other words, we have made every effort to produce individuals who are able to put their conscience into practice. Such education can never be achieved only through intellectual education.

Campus life

Doshisha University has two main campuses. One is the Imadegawa Campus located in the heart of Kyoto City, north of Kyoto Imperial Palace and adjacent to a noted Buddhist temple, Shokokuji. The Kyotanabe Campus, the other main campus, is located in southern Kyoto Prefecture, where modern buildings, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and services, stand on 790,000 square meters of land surrounded by a lush green natural environment.

Sports facilities

On the Kyotanabe Campus, there are full-fledged sports facilities centered around the Davis Memorial Auditorium, with a baseball ground and a golf ground on the north side, an athletics stadium and several fields for team sports such as soccer, American football and rugby on the west side, and training lodges and sports club rooms on the south side.
