Doshisha University

Doshisha Elementary School was opened in April 2006, some 130 years after Doshisha was originally founded in 1875. This opening finally brought to fruition the dream of an integrated educational system “from kindergarten through to university”, a strongly-held ambition of Doshisha's founder Joseph Hardy Neesima.

PhD Programmes

141 years ago, Joseph Hardy Neesima broke new ground in Japanese education and sowed the seeds of liberal learning in people’s mind, which have been passed down over generations. Neesima’s vision formed the basis of Doshisha, and has always been present as Doshisha has evolved.

It is not the power of a few heroes that maintains a nation. Education, knowledge, wisdom, and integrity are central to those who build and run society. We, at Doshisha, aim to produce individuals with such characteristics. It is ingrained in our ethos that our ultimate purpose lies in nurturing the people, who shall be called ‘the conscience of the nation.

Despite the current bleak employment situation, Doshisha University continues to maintain a high graduate employment rate (98.3% for male students; and 98.6% for female students) through substantial and well-developed career support services and activities. In our recent survey of students who have been assured of a job before graduation, more than 91% were ‘greatly satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with their places of employment.
