University of the Ryukyus

History

The University of the Ryukyus was established in 1950 on the remains of Shuri Castle, which was burnt to ashes in the Battle of Okinawa. Under the U.S. administration governing Okinawa, the strong desire of Okinawans for postwar reconstruction and restoration of education moved the U.S. Military Government to establish the first university in the Ryukyu Archipelago.

Education

Educational Purpose and PrincipleAs a university that emphasizes education based on the principle that students are our main constituents and possess the right to learn, the educational purpose of the University of the Ryukyus is the cultivation of people who can create a society reflecting fully the spirit of “Freedom and Equality,Tolerance and Peace.” The university shall contribute to the sustainable growth of society as a whole through educational activities based on autonomy and independence.

Research

  • Principles of Research - The University of the Ryukyus respects academic freedom, and based on the fact that fundamental research and applied research are the two wheels of research activity, the inheritance, creation, and development of knowledge shall be held as our principles of research.
  • Promotion of Research Exchanges - Along with sharing information with the local community, the University of the Ryukyus shall promote research exchanges with domestic institutions and institutions in foreign countries, particularly in the Asian and Pacific regions, and shall disseminate research accomplishments to the rest of the world.

Career

  • Career counselling for international students - The Center provides career seminars, one-to-one career counseling sessions as well as company information meetings for international students who wish to remain in Okinawa and Japan for work. Information on career seminars and other related events can be accessed through the International Student Center website.

Student services

  • Student tutor system - This system applies to all international students of the University. A Japanese student is assigned to you as a tutor in order to provide you with personal assistance. Under the guidance of an academic advisor, your tutor will not only assist you in learning Japanese or other subjects related to your major, but will also help you adjust to your new environment.

Housing services

The University of the Ryukyus is located in Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, and consists of seven faculties and eight graduate schools. Okinawa is blessed with rich nature in a subtropical climate, and many tourists from mainland Japan and overseas visit our islands. Okinawa, which used to be the Ryukyu Kingdom, had trade with China, Korea, and Southeast Asian countries, and its culture was greatly influenced by those countries.

Library services

The University Library houses a wide collection of books, databases, and journals, and offers access to over 20,000 electronic journals. Our holdings are searchable on-site or via our website. Our constant aim is to provide for the needs of both students and researchers.

ICT services

In Nagata Lab is working on various research and development of the Internet and information systems. Specifically, the protocol-level basic research and development, digital content distribution systems and regional Internet Exchange, and system development for education and welfare, working on a wide range of applied research and development of basic technology for Practical Systems .

Medical services

Our university has a Health Administration Center which aims to preserve and promote the health of all staff and students. Please feel free to visit the Center if you require simple medical treatment or medication, a medical examination, first-aid treatment, or to seek medical advice. Services provided at the Center are free.

Campus life

  • University of the Ryukyus International House The university has one dormitory for international students called “International House”, consisting of single, couple’s and family rooms. The term of residence is one year. Room Rents & Utilities
  • Student Dormitory There are student dormitories available for Japanese and international students. Male and Female dormitories have single rooms and residents share kitchen and bathroom.
  • Due to the limited number of rooms for on-campus housing, there is no guarantee for one to be admitted.There are a number of private apartments around the campus. In general, housing cost is lower in Okinawa than in big cities in Japan.
