About

History

March 1903: The Nebraska Legislature appropriated $50,000 to build a normal school in western Nebraska, touching off a heated competition among several communities bidding to be selected. On September 1, 1903, after 111 ballots, the State Board of Education awarded the school to Kearney for its offer of 20 acres and the Green Terrace apartments for a dormitory.

Education

The University of Nebraska at Kearney will achieve national distinction for a high quality, multidimensional learning environment, engagement with community and public interests, and preparation of students to lead responsible and productive lives in a democratic, multicultural society.

Research

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity connects students with faculty mentors through independent research opportunities. URCA  is a central spoke in UNK’s mission to provide every student with experiential learning. URCA offers various funding opportunities to support undergraduate student research and creative activities, along with a robust community and support to present their work.

Services

Student services

Welcome to the new-look Nebraskan Student Union – the heart of campus life and activity for UNK students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests.

The union is the main gathering spot on campus, a place where students connect with each other and the community. It’s one of the first locations future Lopers see when they arrive on campus and a building where students meet throughout their time here to enjoy a meal, grab a cup of coffee, study for that big exam or hang out with friends.

Housing services

The University of Nebraska at Kearney ("UNK" or the "University") recognizes the importance of providing reasonable accommodations in its housing policies and practices where necessary for individuals with disabilities to use and enjoy University housing. Request for accommodation is made fewer than 60 days before the individual intends to move into University housing, UNK cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet the individual’s accommodation needs during the first semester or term of occupancy.

Library services

The University of Nebraska Kearney Library was built in 1963 and named after professor of English Calvin T. Ryan. An addition to the library was completed in 1981-82 that doubled its size. Study and classroom seating accommodates over 1,100 library users.

ICT services

University of Nebraska Information Technology Services, a unified organization serving the NU system as well as the Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha campuses, is actively engaged in efforts related to COVID-19.  ITS works closely with campus planning teams to accommodate and support action plans as they take shape.
