History
At the beginning of the 1960s, after the entry into force of the Treaty of Rome, the academic authorities at the ULB decided to create an Institute for European Studies.
Education
The IEE-ULB covers mainly four disciplines: European law, political science, economics and history. As an interdisciplinary centre for research and teaching, it trains specialists in European issues.
Research
The IEE-ULB ensures consistency between its research agenda and its teaching provision. Research evolves according to the construction of Europe and European challenges. In this spirit, the courses are regularly reviewed.
Since its inception, the IEE has been positioned at the forefront of research in European topics. It is certified a “Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (CEJM)”. This confirms the quality of the research conducted on European issues and challenges.
Research at the IEE revolves around 4 themes:
- Europe as an area of freedom, security and justice
- Europe as an area of economic and social regulation
- Europe as a community of norms and values
- Europe in the world
Career
At IEE-ULB, we prepare our students for their insertion into the marketplace, and into a career in the field of European affairs.
The IEE supports its students in their search for an internship and after their graduation by publishing offers on the intranet, the Virtual University, and the l’ULB Career Center.
We also provide useful addresses via our communication channels and create partnerships with organisations that host our students on a regular basis.
Finally, we organise recruitment and mentoring meetings to promote professional exchanges during the academic year between our current students and our alumni.

Difficult but successful
I'm going to tell you about my two years of Master's, which were difficult because the programme took place on a working people's timetable. In that sense, when you work all day and have to be at school at night, it can be difficult, plus the group projects were really terrible to manage. I think people who are not stressed at all can have an okay experience, but as a dedicated and over-invested student, I struggled a lot with anxiety. I'm a bit sad because I didn't learn things that could be important for a job. I've got my degree but I don't feel comfortable with the job offers that are coming my way. University hasn't been good for me, personally, at least my faculty hasn't been.
Studies in algerian university
It was a good experience, but it has a lot deficiencies such as the subjects that we study, every year we study something not necessary, some teachers aren't in the level to be working in the university....
For francophone students that learn independently
Most of the professors are researchers and dont have formal teaching experience, resulting in classes that are not very engaging. Since most classes fast-paced and last at least 2 hours (with a 10 minute break in between), its easy to lose focus and become unmotivated. I would mainly recommend this university for students coming from a Belgian/French system because, as a student coming from an international school who had French as their 3rd language, it was extremely difficult to make friends. The social-culture is very Belgian and will easily make you feel as an outlier if you dont come from a Belgian/French school. In addition, the professors offer very little resources for students to practice independently and dont offer any past exams models to practice either. This often results in you arriving into an exam with little idea of the difficulty of the questions. I found myself also having to teach the material myself because of the poor teaching quality (from a great majority, with some exceptions). On a positive note, students have a lot of opportunities for financial support such as having 2 hot lunches (that are filling, nutritious, and delicious). They have halal, vegan and vegetarian options and a caf that sells a great variety of beverages/snacks.
