At the beginning of the 1960s, after the entry into force of the Treaty of Rome, the academic authorities at the ULB decided to create an Institute for European Studies.
The IEE-ULB covers mainly four disciplines: European law, political science, economics and history. As an interdisciplinary centre for research and teaching, it trains specialists in European issues.
The IEE-ULB ensures consistency between its research agenda and its teaching provision. Research evolves according to the construction of Europe and European challenges. In this spirit, the courses are regularly reviewed.
Since its inception, the IEE has been positioned at the forefront of research in European topics. It is certified a “Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (CEJM)”. This confirms the quality of the research conducted on European issues and challenges.
Research at the IEE revolves around 4 themes:
At IEE-ULB, we prepare our students for their insertion into the marketplace, and into a career in the field of European affairs.
The IEE supports its students in their search for an internship and after their graduation by publishing offers on the intranet, the Virtual University, and the l’ULB Career Center.
We also provide useful addresses via our communication channels and create partnerships with organisations that host our students on a regular basis.
Finally, we organise recruitment and mentoring meetings to promote professional exchanges during the academic year between our current students and our alumni.
The administrative team at the IEE-ULB supports the teaching, research and public debate activities organized at the Institute. It is lead by the Institute's President and Director, who are accompanied in their administrative responsibilities by an Executive Manager & Communication Director and an Executive Director for Research. A dynamic team deals with student affairs and logistics.
There are several options available at IEE-ULB: university or private residences, or staying off-campus. If you would like a room in one of the university residences, get more information in the Housing office.
The European documentation centre at the IEE-ULB brings together, among others, official documents from the European institutions. Our students also have access to other repositories.
IEE-ULB provides students with access to a European documentation centre, numerous virtual and local resources, and open access computers.
The IEE-ULB digital campus offers students online access to practical and pedagogical tools. Discover the available resources.
The ULB Health Service is available for IEE-ULB students and offers health care that can be fully reimbursed by healthcare funds.
IEE-ULB is accessible to people with reduced mobility and the visually impaired. Support is offered to students with specific needs.
Located in Brussels, the IEE-ULB benefits from its location in the heart of Europe. European experts, senior officials and policymakers are involved in teaching, research and public debate.
EE-ULB students have access to sports organised by ULB Sports. Train at competitive rates and take advantage of the various facilities: tennis and basketball courts de tennis, but also yoga classes, weight rooms, among other options.
Community life at IEE-ULB is embodied by Eyes on Europe and SAIES (Students Association of the Institute for European Studies). Of course, our students also take part in activities at ULB. Two student societies bring IEE-ULB to life for students: Eyes On Europe and SAIES.
