History

Founded in 1866, shortly after the end of the Civil War, Fisk University is a historically black university, and is the oldest institution of higher learning in Nashville, Tennessee. Fisk’s outstanding faculty and students continue to enhance the University’s national reputation for academic excellence, which is validated year after year by the leading third party reviewers.

Research

Fisk University's research resources are responsible for the institutional assessment and research activities of Fisk University, including the identification of current issues on higher education, particularly in the liberal arts sector; compiling and reporting information on the university’s internal and external environments; analyzing and reporting trends in institutional resources, admissions, student satisfaction, retention, and graduation rates; and conducting peer comparison studies.

Student services

AESP supports Fisk students who are experiencing academic difficulty as well as students who desire to improve their academic performance. AESP is responsible for the further development, implementation, and evaluation of the university-wide initiative to impact retention, persistence, and graduation rates at Fisk University.

Housing services

Student Housing & Residence Life support the academic experience by providing social, academic, and healthy living/wellness programs for our residents. The Residence Life experiences offers opportunities for leadership through becoming a Resident Assistant, joining Residence Hall Council, or taking advantage of programs sponsored by student leaders and staff in the Residence Halls.

Library services

The Fisk University John Hope and Aurelia E. Franklin Library is the academic hub of the university, working to support the academic programs by providing books, electronic resources, and other materials. The present building was completed in 1969 and opened in January 1970. It houses over 200,000 volumes.

Campus life

The Residence Life Department maintains a healthy living and learning campus environment that respects and appreciates the uniqueness of each individual, while encouraging personal growth, integrity, ethical leadership development, and student learning.

Sports facilities

The Athletic Department will provide a progressive environment in which members of the Fisk community can take part in competitive and or recreational opportunities while providing its student athletes with a positive environment in which to learn, live, compete and practice. The department will foster a sense of pride and loyalty in the institution among its students, alumni, and friends, serving as a rallying point for the Fisk community, and increasing private support to both the University as a whole and the Department.

Student clubs

Learning occurs all over the University-both inside and outside the classroom. Fisk University provides a variety of student-centered social and educational activities, academic support programs, intramurals, and residence life programming as a part of the Fisk Experience. By developing your leadership skills, providing community service opportunities, and supporting student led initiatives.

Fisk University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Music (B.M.), and Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees.
