History
Founded in 1887 before Los Angeles had its first paved street, saw its first automobile, or made its first movie Occidental is L.A.’s first and only liberal arts college.
Our only building burned down in 1896, we moved four times in less than 30 years, and at times barely managed to pay our bills. Oxy has always been an institution that recruited talent regardless of a student’s background.

- We offer 45 majors, minors and programs across the arts, humanities and sciences as well as countless opportunities for independent research, internships, and other experiential learning. Don’t want to limit yourself to one area? You won’t have to—interdisciplinary majors, self-designed courses of study and majors with multiple emphases let you make your academic journey at Oxy uniquely your own. Interested in law or the health professions? We also offer pre-law and pre-health advising.
Research
The Center for Research & Scholarship (CRS) supports, promotes, and builds community around faculty research, scholarship, and professional achievement.
The programs and resources offered by the Center for Research & Scholarship are guided by the following goals:
- To provide support for faculty members as they conduct research, apply for research grants, make and show creative work, and publish books and articles
- To promote faculty research, scholarship, and professional achievement to alumni/ae, parents, prospective students, and the public
- To sponsor events that contribute to a vibrant intellectual life on campus
Career
The Hameetman Career Center offers advising in three main areas: career services, fellowship awards, and pre-health advising. We provide personalized assistance to help students and alumni connect their interests and skills with a variety of career opportunities in Los Angeles and beyond.

Student services
The Registrar’s Office handles most academic issues for students and faculty such as transcripts, registration and grade processing.
Housing services
Students may request accommodations at any time while enrolled at Occidental College. However, it is recommended that students register for accommodations prior to, or within the first 2 weeks of the semester commencing. All requests will be evaluated by the Disability Services Office. Accommodations and services are determined on a case-by-case basis.

ICT services
The ITS Staff is a team of information technology professionals dedicated to serving the College by aligning ourselves with its missions and goals. We work together and collaborate with the Oxy community as we strive to Deliver Excellence in Service.
Medical services
All entering students must complete and return all health forms prior to registration. They will become a part of the student’s permanent medical record and will be held in strict confidence at the Emmons Wellness CenterAll enrolled students must have health insurance.
Campus life
Nestled in the hills of Los Angeles’ Eagle Rock community and replete with natural beauty, the Occidental campus is both peaceful and a place of palpable energy.
Though downtown is mere miles away, our picturesque campus defies the stereotype of an urban college. Ranked the sixth "Most Beautiful" college campus by Newsweek, we reside on 120 acres studded with century-old oak and eucalyptus trees, graceful arches, and halls built in the Spanish Colonial style.
Between the Academic Commons and the Johnson Student Center, the Academic Quad is the heart of campus, where trees provide shade for study, conversation, and contemplation.
Sports facilities
The De Mandel Aquatics Center, McKinnon Family Tennis Center and Robinson Family Terrace will have a signicant impact on athletes, the campus and the community as a whole.
We are grateful to our many generous supporters for bringing this long-awaited project to completion and for helping us build new, beautiful facilities for our student-athletes and the greater Oxy community.
Student clubs
Associated Students of Occidental College (ASOC) is for the students! Every student paying student fees is a member of the ASOC. ASOC student government is comprised of two elected sections (Senate and Honor Board), and 2 appointed sections (Renewable Energy and Sustainability Fund and Diversity & Equity Board). Additionally, ASOC funds various Student Services that add to student’s experience at Oxy by providing resources and employment.
Accreditation
Oxy is proud to be a member institution in the Presidents' Alliance for Excellence in Student Learning and Accountability. We are also an active participant in the Degree Qualifications Profile project through the partnership between the Lumina Foundation and WASC. We have presented at various conferences and participate in national conversations of higher education assessment.
