History

Earlham has its roots in the Great Migration of Quakers from the eastern United States, especially from North Carolina, in the first half of the nineteenth century. A peculiarly Quaker combination of idealism and practicality drew them to the Northwest Territory. As Friends, those who came out of the South had found themselves increasingly uneasy living in a slave society.

Campus life

Earlham's 800-acre campus includes Earlham College and the Earlham School of Religion. Approximately 1,200 undergraduate students call this tree-shaded campus their home.

On the campus, students and visitors will discover a 600-acre stretch of woods, streams, ponds, old fields and prairie used for scientific research and recreation. Additional natural areas are set aside for scientific research, including an old growth forest and a rock preserve.

Sports facilities

The Wellness Department is dedicated to providing a variety of safe and quality programs, facilities, and services. Our goal is to promote, establish and maintain an environment that encourages healthy lifestyle choices to affirm physical, mental, and social well-being throughout our community.

Student clubs

Earlham has dozens of clubs and organizations tailored to all sorts of interests. Whether you want to continue a favorite activity you’ve been doing for years, or try something brand new, you’ll find lots of opportunities at Earlham. Including opportunities that are a little unexpected — like cricket matches on sunny spring days, hammocks hanging from trees, games of humans vs. zombies across campus, or performing with Dance Alloy — one of our largest student groups.

Earlham is accredited, since 1913, by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In 2014, Earlham received a full 10-year renewal of its accreditation.
