Lewis and Clark College

Lewis & Clark is a private institution with a public conscience, a residential campus with global reach. Students and faculty throughout all three of Lewis & Clark’s schools the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Education and Counseling, and the School of Law pursue new ways of knowing by combining classic liberal learning with pioneering collaboration.

History

Lewis & Clark’s journey from pioneer vision to premier institution of higher education began in 1867, 60 miles south of present-day Portland. In that year, the Presbytery of Oregon secured a charter from the state legislature. The church partnered with the town of Albany to fund and build a two-story building on the town’s College Square site, and a school was born.

Education

Lewis & Clark carries out this mission through undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences and postgraduate programs in the closely related professions of education, counseling, and law. Lewis & Clark mounts these programs as both separately valid and mutually supportive enterprises. In all its endeavors it seeks to be a community of scholars who are alive to inquiry, open to diversity, and disciplined to work in an interdependent world.

Student services

The Office of Case Management specializes in helping students make connections to other campus services as well as to health care on- and off-campus. Common areas of concern that we see in our office include issues involving both mental and physical health, substance use, eating disorders, learning differences and financial obstacles. We empower students to build personal resiliency and develop strategies to overcome barriers to success, and we serve as a partner on the path to graduation. The Office of Case Management is directed by Aimée Milne. Aimee is a licensed professional counselor with an M.A. from Lewis & Clark.

Housing services

Campus housing is available to all undergraduate students at Lewis & Clark a few students, the four-semester requirement may be interrupted for a variety of reasons. The institutional expectation however, is that once the students return to campus, they will complete the four semester requirement. The College requires all entering students to live on campus for four semesters because we believe that your academic experience is enhanced by the learning that goes on outside the classroom.

Library services

Located at the heart of the undergraduate campus, Lewis & Clark’s Watzek Library is an ideal setting for research, study and collaboration. Serving undergraduate and graduate students, Watzek provides rich collections of print and electronic resources and friendly librarians to help students with their research projects.

ICT services

The Division of Information Technology helps students, faculty, and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate School of Education and Counseling use technology for learning, teaching, and research. Law Computing Services provides technical assistance to the law school community. All three school support both Macintosh and Windows users.

Medical services

Care is provided equally to all registered students regardless of age, race ethnicity, physical ability or attributes, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. Health Service is open to all students from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, and the Graduate School.  Our goal is to provide safe, quality health care for students in the Lewis and Clark community.

Campus life

Our campus is well known for its beauty. Its woods, carefully tended gardens, and mix of historical and contemporary Northwest art and architecture make it a unique and distinctive location. It is also a fun and lively hub of activity for most of the year, with amenities and resources to fit your group’s needs whenever your event takes place.

Sports facilities

Academics and activities go hand in hand at Lewis & Clark as part of a balanced‚ interesting‚ and rewarding college experience. A variety of College offices and student groups offer a range of opportunities to enhance personal development and leadership for all students at Lewis & Clark. The College offers nearly 70 different student clubs, teams, and other organizations.

Student clubs

The commitment of students to the public interest has long played a central role in the law school’s public interest offerings. The pro bono program, summer stipends, LRAP, and the certificate were all started or proposed by  student-run organizations. We invite you to explore them all. Those with a particular interest in working in the public interest sector, or doing pro bono work, should consider participating in one or more of the following groups:

  • Public Interest Law Project (PILP)
  • American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
  • Crime Victims’ Rights Alliance
  • Environmental Justice Advocates
  • Family Law Society
  • Health Law Society
  • Immigration Student Group
  • National Lawyers Guild
  • Northwest Environmental Defense Center (NEDC)

Lewis & Clark is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).
