History

History is more than the study of the past. It is an encounter with the cultural possibilities that human beings have confronted over time. The History Department at Whitman encourages that encounter through a rigorous, multidimensional curriculum that exposes all students to global and comparative perspectives on different regions, eras and methodologies.

Education

Besides curricular offerings on topics in educational studies, Whitman offers numerous co-curricular opportunities for students who may want to gain practical experience in settings that are education-focused.  These opportunities include mentoring and tutoring local students, student clubs, and summer internship opportunities.  Information about these opportunities is available from the advisers listed above, from student clubs, and from the Student Engagement Center.

Research

All research conducted by Whitman College faculty or students involving human participants, regardless of funding source, must be submitted to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review. As a recipient of federal research funds, Whitman College is required to submit an annual report on research misconduct to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. You will find the college's policy on research misconduct, including training requirements on the responsible conduct of research, on the Grants and Foundation Relations website.

Complete overview of scholarships

Housing services

Students are housed in a residence hall on the Whitman campus which is within a short walk of all studios. The beautiful park-like campus is complete with duck ponds, a meandering stream, and footbridges. Experienced 24 hour adult supervision is provided along with 24 hour campus security.

Library services

Penrose Library is open 24/7, and at least one student has called it “the most beautiful thing in the world.” The library is comfortable, functional, centrally located on campus and provides a great view of Ankeny Field. It offers plenty of study rooms and cozy, light-filled nooks for Whitties to curl up with their laptops, books and research materials for a long night of study.

Medical services

The College recognizes health maintenance and promotion as essential to both learning and efficiency. Good health in all respects is a determining factor in the academic success of students attending college. In support of these goals, the Welty Center Student Health Services, located at 11 Merriam Street, offers students convenient primary health care.

Campus life

Whitman students live and work on a residential campus that doubles as both an arboretum and an outdoor art museum. Located in a welcoming college town, it is a place that is home to an extraordinary diversity of talents, interests, activities, and people. Here it's easy to venture outside your comfort zone, extend yourself intellectually, collaborate with others and share new ideas and insights. Here you will find the teachers, friendships, resources, inspiration, time, and space you need to discover yourself and your ability to make a difference in the world.

Sports facilities

At Whitman we believe that the life of the mind and intellectual learning require a balance of fitness and wellness programs. Sport Studies, Recreation and Athletics at Whitman intend to complement your total educational experience, nurturing healthy qualities such as self-discipline, leadership, confidence, and collaboration. Whatever your athletic goal – from a dream of the Olympics, to completing a marathon, to someday coaching a Little League team – Whitman’s Sport Studies, Recreation and Athletics Department offers the facilities, programming, instruction, and competitive opportunities you will need to succeed.

Student clubs

When you participate in co-curricular activities at Whitman you will discover new interests, meet new people, and enhance the educational experiences you have at the college.

Accreditation

Whitman College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, an institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and/or the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. Whitman's Department of Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society.
