Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC)

Find More PhDs
As intellectual property (IP) plays an ever greater role in the fields of science, technology, business and the arts, the need for IP experts increases year by year. Taught to a maximum of 38 students per year, the LL.M. program "Intellectual Property and Competition Law" at the MIPLC equips its graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to handle complex IP issues in a global context.

History

In 2003, the Max Planck Society, the University of Augsburg, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and The George Washington University, Washington DC, USA, together created the Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC) as a center for research and education in intellectual property and competition law. Since then, more than 400 MIPLC graduates have embarked on rewarding careers in IP.

Education

The MIPLC offers the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program "Intellectual Property and Competition Law" which is

  • Suitable for law graduates and students with other backgrounds alike
  • Taught entirely in English
  • Multi-jurisdictional: Every subject is taught from the European and from the US perspective
  • Diverse with a wide variety of modules to choose from
  • Interdisciplinary, discussing all aspects of IP from the legal and relevant economic perspectives
  • Hands-on, with the practical aspects of IP covered in simulations, case-studies, and an optional internship
  • Supplemented with study visits to the European Patent Office and other IP organizations and guest lectures and talks throughout the year
  • Located in Europe's IP Capital Munich

Research

IP and competition law research is a central focus of the MIPLC. In close cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, research projects in all areas of intellectual property and competition law, e.g. in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, are carried out. In the second half of the academic year, each student writes a master's thesis under the supervision of a renowned expert for the topic the student has chosen. The best master's theses are then published as books or on SSRN.

Moreover, every year the MIPLC grants scholarships to a number of LL.M. graduates who embark on Ph.D. projects.

Career

In the MIPLC Internship Program, counselors actively work with MIPLC students to identify suitable internships which take place at the end of the academic year.

MIPLC graduates have obtained outstanding positions in the IP world. They have gone on to work for IP institutions such as national Patent and Trademark Offices, the World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO, the European Union Intellectual Property Office EUIPO, and the European Patent Office EPO; for national and international (patent) law firms; for government; for NGOs and think tanks; or for the IP departments of large corporations in the private sector. Others have obtained Ph.D. degrees from top-rated universities to pursue academic careers.

Student services

Students, lecturers, tutors and staff at the MIPLC form a close-knit learning community. The staff offices are located on the same floor as the students' offices, so that a student who has a question can simply walk over and talk to an MIPLC team member. The Program Director is the Academic Advisor to all students, discussing the selection of classes and potential master's thesis topics with them. Career councellors are available to go over career-related questions and organize internships.

All students are provided desks in shared offices and enjoy access to a large number of legal databases. A student kitchen is provided and is the hub of student life at the MIPLC!

Housing services

The MIPLC does not provide accommodation.

All future students are equipped with a list of flat share websites, housing agencies, landlords of previous students, etc. This list will help them in their search for an accommodation. In Munich, all types of lodgings are available, from dormitories and flat shares to individual apartments.

Library services

  • The Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, located across the street from the MIPLC, has a comprehensive and ever-growing IP library of around 210,000 volumes. It is the largest library of its kind in the world. MIPLC students have full access to it.
  • The MIPLC has its own library, which is stocked with books on all areas and topics taught during the LL.M. program.

ICT services

High speed internet access is provided throughout the MIPLC premises. Students have access to a large number of legal databases.

Medical services

As a prerequisite for enrollment at the university, students have to buy a health insurance plan which is valid and recognized in Germany. Future students will be provided information about the health insurance system in Germany.

Campus life

The MIPLC premises are located in downtown Munich, across the street from the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition and its library. Restaurants, canteens and shops are in the immediate vicinity. The famous "English Garden", a large landscape park in the inner city, is close by. The MIPLC is easily accessible by public transport. Many students buy a (used) bike to get around the city.

Munich is regularly ranked one of the most livable cities in the world. The Alps with all their hiking trails and skiing slopes are less than an hour's drive away, and there are a lot of lakes all around the city. Munich is a very lively city with tens of thousands of students and an amazing nightlife.

Sports facilities

MIPLC students can use the sport facilities of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) which offer all kinds of sportive activities.

Student clubs

Graduates become members of the MIPLC Alumni Network. Once a year, the MIPLC family gathers for the MIPLC Alumni Conference, during which alumni of the different classes give presentations about IP topics they are currently dealing with.

The MIPLC LL.M. program "Intellectual Property and Competition Law" is fully accredited by the German accreditation agency ACQUIN.

Moreover, the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD has selected the MIPLC LL.M. program "Intellectual Property and Competition Law" as participating program in its special scholarship scheme "Development-related Postgraduate Studies".
