The Hampshire College Early Learning Center was founded in the fall of 1981 by Hampshire College staff who saw the need for an on-campus child care program. The first year, nine children were cared for and taught in the basement of a college dormitory.
Today, the center serves forty families, approximately 65% of whom are affiliated with the college. In August of 1988, we moved to our current site.
No approach to education is better geared to meet the challenges ahead than the model Hampshire provides. Experience-based. Learner-centered. Inquiry-driven. Hampshire is extreme sports for the mind.
Where is there another institution that requires every undergraduate to turn their ideas into action by pulling together so many loose strands? That requires them to find those strands in the first place by imagining their own questions and then wrestling with the maddening way that the search for answers only deepens the question?
There is no other undergraduate institution that approaches learning this way.

The dean of students office and the division of student life provide programming, resources, and an array of services to help facilitate student development and student success; support and cultivate a rich learning environment; and encourage community building at Hampshire College.
From its founding, Hampshire College has been designed as a residential learning community. To that end, we strive to create residential environments that are the most conducive to learning for each individual student. We also facilitate a process for students to form their own living communities, based on their living habits, commitment to a substance-free lifestyle, common learning goals, social identities, or medical needs.
The Hampshire College library is a dynamic hub of people, technology, and information that serves as an incubator of ideas across all disciplines. Educating for change demands comprehension of the past and vision for the future. The library's innovative and risk-taking intellectual environment fosters new ways of creating knowledge and understanding.
Students looking for support with programs and activities have access to many resources in our office, including poster-making supplies; computer and printer access; use of our fax machine and telephone; student group mailboxes; a comprehensive student events calendar; and a knowledgeable staff eager to help you.
Health and Counseling Services is open M-F, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. when school is in session.
At Hampshire, your education focuses on personalized, independent work, close collaboration with faculty, and hands-on experience through study abroad, short-term field studies, internships, volunteer work, advanced independent projects, and much more.
The Bay Road Tennis Club and MultiSport Center, on the campus of Hampshire College, is open during the academic year, September through mid-May. Several membership plans are offered, from tennis court use to the use of the track only.

I love Hampshire. As an interdisciplinary school, I am able to study all the things I’m interested instead of being confined to a single major. Classes range from 8-25 people (often on the lower side), and professors genuinely want to help you succeed - I don’t just feel like a number on a roster. With narrative evaluations instead of traditional grades, I am better able to understand what my strengths are in my academic work, as well as what I need to work on, which helps me truly engage with material instead of cramming and then forgetting after an exam. I’ve enjoyed living accommodations. All years get single rooms, which has been a plus - it’s nice to have a private place to unwind after a long day. However, there are still many ways to socialize, since you’ll be living in a hall with 4-10 other people, all sharing a bathroom and lounge. There are also events every day, and with such an intimate class size, you get to know people no matter what. As someone from a big city, I need to be moving around constantly, so the bus system (called the PVTA) has been a life saver. They’re free, reliable, and stop on-campus every half an hour. The buses go directly to all of the five-college consortium campuses (UMass Amherst, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Amherst College), as well as directly into surrounding towns. As college towns, they have a variety of bookshops, restaurants, and boba places, so there’s stuff to do if you need a change of scenery for a bit. As a member of the five college consortium, students can take classes at any of the other schools, making over 7,000 class offerings a semester. It’s super easy to do and I’ve found it very valuable. I will not lie, food is not the best in the world. However, UMass Amherst has been rated #1 campus food in the nation, and if you take a class there you can eat in their dining halls. Just a head’s up. The student population is extremely diverse, not the type of frat-boys and sorority-girls who all dress and look the same. Everyone is passionate about what they study and I have found to be genuinely good people. All in all, I think Hampshire is a unique school that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. I enjoy my time here and can already see that it’ll shape my future in a positive way.
