The history of Jamia Hamdard begins with the establishment of a small Unani clinic in the year 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, one of the well-known practitioners of Unani System of Medicine of his time. He gave the name “Hamdard” to his venture which means “sympathy for all and sharing of pain”.
Jamia Hamdard (JH) was declared as a deemed-to-be University in 1989 by the HRD Ministry on the recommendation of University Grants Commission (UGC) under the UGC Act 1956 in recognition of the services provided by erstwhile educational institutes established by HNF, the Hamdard National Foundation. These institutes built over a period of time included the Hamdard College of Pharmacy, Hamdard Tibbi College, Rufaida College of Nursing, the Institute of History of Medicine & Medical Research, and Indian Institute of Islamic Studies.
In tune with the principle that no educational institution is complete without adequate facilities for co-curricular and extra curricular activities, the university provides extensive facilities. The university also has a fully equipped hospital complete with all modern diagnostic equipments, for providing medical facilities, to it’s employees and outsiders.
In the campus there is a guest house called Scholars’ House with 12 double-bed air-conditioned rooms and 27 single-bed rooms, out of which 18 single-bed rooms are air-conditioned and 9 single-bed rooms are air cooled, 4 flats with 4 air-conditioned bed. Rooms with living room, dining room and a small lounge equipped with telephone, television, refrigerator and a small kitchenette, with attendant to provide all the comforts required is also a part of our guest house. Besides accommodating University guests, outside examiners, members of the selection board, this guest house is used for residential conferences and has proved very useful for the participants of the conferences.
University library system consists of 6 faculty libraries and one Central Library. The Central Library is named as Hakim Mohammad Said (HMS) Central Library. Five faculty libraries---F/o Science library, F/o Medicine library, F/o Nursing library, F/o Pharmacy library and F/o Medical & Allied Health Sciences library are located in their respective buildings.
The University has excellent state-of-the-art computing facilities and system analysis units in it’s computer centre to cater to needs of students . The computer centre is well equipped with advanced computers along with all the necessary peripherals as well as requisite softwares .
In the first phase, the institute is supported by two teaching hospitals, namely, the 606 Bedded Hakeem Abdul Hameed Centenary Hospital and 240 Bedded Sayeeda Memorial Hospital. In addition, a 200 Bedded Hamdard Specialty Hospital is planned, deploying state of the art in medical technology to deliver tertiary level medical care.
A Gymnasium has been constructed with the assistance of University Grants Commission and Hamdard National Foundation in 1999. Besides, playgrounds for cricket/football, volleyball and badminton (both for girls and boys) are available. A Cemented ground for basketball is under construction.
