University of Namibia

The University of Namibia (UNAM) is the largest and leading National institution of higher education in the country.  It is a diverse institution with a student population from 41 countries and from all continents. Although a relatively young university, it has grown to support a student population of over 30,144 this year.

History

The University of Namibia (UNAM) was established by an Act of Parliament on August 31, 1992 as recommended by a Commission on Higher Education. Thus, a unique confluence bound the birth of the new nation in 1990 with that of the University of Namibia.

Education

Academic programmes at UNAM emanate from eight faculties and two schools which are: Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Faculty of Economics and Management Science; Faculty of Education, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Health Sciences, consisting of the School of Nursing and Public Health and the School of Medicine; and the Faculty of Science.

To meet the educational needs of a diverse nation, UNAM has 12 campuses and eleven regional centres country-wide, the latter which are managed by the Centre for External Studies, the distance education unit of the University.

Research

The University of Namibia (UNAM) recognises and values the importance of research in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge and fostering socioeconomic development by addressing challenges faced by society.

The Centre for Research and Publications also helps position UNAM with links to other universities, research institutions and strategic collaborators all over the world. It does this by facilitating research collaborations and actively engaging with stakeholders to articulate the alignment between research focus areas, institutional priorities, national, regional and international research imperatives.

Career

The Career Resource Centre (CRC) is a resource centre run by Professional Services Division at the Office of the Dean of Students. It provides a range of services to students around career planning and exploration, personal development and the job search process. Our range of resources and materials aims at promoting awareness of the importance of career development as part of the university learning experience. It is our mission to see to it that students are competent, confident and are well prepared for the world of work before and after graduating.

Student services

The Office of the Dean of Students (ODS) is the biggest department of the University that houses all structured non-academic student support programs and services. These programs are designed primarily to ease and guide students' transition from high school life, where parents and teachers metered out discipline and control measures, into university life, where self-discipline and self-reliance are urgently needed; to counter the seemingly endless individual freedom; and to serve as internal balance setter for the demands and pressures of academic life.

Housing services

The University of Namibia boasts with hostel facilities at its 11 Campuses. The facilities are managed by the Office of the Dean of students under its Hostel Section run by the Head of Accommodation, Mr. Eron Kuzatjike, Hostel superintends, Hostel matrons and the Housing Committee headed by the SRC Accommodation.

The University offers the most affordable student accommodation in town with the closest proximity to all the academic facilities such as the Library, Labs and Classes. As the custodian of student welfare the Dean of Students office has included a breakfast meal as part of the hostel fee package making sure that all our hostel students are well fed before they embark on an academic day.

Library services

Library and Information Services are recognized world wide as indispensable contributors to education, research, knowledge creation and knowledge management. The Library of the University of Namibia is a national information support system for providing access to high quality information and knowledge necessary to support the academic programmes and the curriculum of the University.

ICT services

Here at Khomasdal Campus, we not only strive to provide enhanced ICT Facilities for our students, but try to make it available and easy accessible. By constant communication between ICT personnel and our students, we are able to provide adequate services, thus giving the students more time and resources to actually concentrate on their studies.

Campus life

On the outskirts of Windhoek, the University of Namibia's main campus is nestled amongst undulating hills. About five minutes' drive from the centre of town, the main campus is easy to find on the intersection, Western Bypass and Mandume Ndemufayo Avenue, Pionierspark.

Sports facilities

  • Tennis courts
  • Boxing facility
  • Campus gym

Their qualifications are recognized by the NQA and are submitted to the NQA for quality assurance and registration on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and are deemed authentic.
