History

In 1901, Millikin University was founded by self-made businessman and philanthropist, James Millikin. Millikin, who started as a farmer and achieved success within the real estate and banking industries during the 19th century, sought to create an institution of higher learning that was open to all and that integrated the traditional liberal arts along with the practical arts of the professions.

Education

From Day One, Millikin’s theory-practice approach to education was unique. Today, Millikin takes this idea a step further with Performance Learning. Students in every area of study are able to participate in various classes, programs, projects, and performances that engage them in ways in which they’ll receive practical, hands-on experience that they can’t receive anywhere else.

Research

Researchers from Millikin University's Department of Biology have published an article in Biochemistry Research International, a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes original research articles in all areas of biochemistry.

Career

The Millikin University Career Center enhances the University mission by:

  • Cultivating a collaborative institutional career-focused culture that actively prepares students for professional success through the development of career readiness competencies.
  • Connecting students and alumni to a diverse range of networking and career opportunities.
  • Collecting and disseminating relevant and timely career-related data and trends.

Confidential personal counseling services are available throughout the academic year to assist students in overcoming their difficulties. It is our goal to assist students in improving their abilities to make informed decisions that positively affect their mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Housing services

Students may live in University operated residence halls (freshmen only) and apartments (if available), Greek chapter houses, and the Woods at Millikin. All upperclassmen students reside at the Woods at Millikin.

Library services

  • 110 full-service hours each week
  • A staff of four librarians, four paraprofessionals, and many student assistants
  • 40,000 square feet of study, stacks, and service space on four floors
  • 12 public computer workstations with campus network and Internet access, including to the library's own resource-rich website
  • 5 wireless laptops for Millikin student use within the library

ICT services

The Information Technology Department provides service to the Millikin community in support of the mission of the university. We strive to deliver excellent support in the use of academic and administrative technology, the network infrastructure and cabling, the use of media, telecommunications, and printing and mail services for students, faculty and staff.

Medical services

Wellness is the state of optimal well-being, not simply the absence of illness, but an improved quality of life resulting from enhanced physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Campus life

Millikin's Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement provides students with the necessary tools to be a democratic citizen in a global environment. By providing you leadership opportunities, programs, and educational resources we empower you to explore the University fundamental questions: Who Am I? How Do I Know? What Should I Do?

Sports facilities

Millikin University teams participate as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. Prior joining the NCAA Division III and the CCIW in the 1946–47 season, Millikin primarily competed as an Independent of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) back since their first year of athletics in the 1903–04 academic year. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field; while women's sports include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball.

Student clubs

An involved student is one who devotes considerable energy to academics, spends much time on campus, participates actively in student organizations/activities, and interacts often with faculty (Alexander Astin, Theory of Involvement).

Millikin University has been accredited since 1914 by what is now the Higher Learning Commission: A commission of the North Central Association.
