Marywood University prepares students to have a positive impact on society at regional and global levels while providing each student with the foundation for success in an interdependent world. Marywood University is coeducational, comprehensive, residential, and Catholic. 

History

Founded in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the University serves men and women from a variety of backgrounds and religions.

Education

Marywood's programs are administered through three degree-granting colleges. Undergraduate degrees are offered in a variety of academic programs, including the arts, sciences, music, fine arts, social work, and nursing. All students are required to complete a core curriculum in the liberal arts in addition to the courses in their major. Opportunities for undergraduates abound through double majors, honors and independent study programs, practicums, internships, and study abroad. Army and Air Force ROTC programs are also available.

Research

Research and Sponsored Programs, under the direction of Diane W. Keller, Ph.D., Assistant to the Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs, is responsible for Academic Affairs grants and contracts (sponsored programs) initiated by or to be managed by faculty, academic departments, colleges, centers, or institutes.  Each sponsored program is conducted within a framework of regulations, policies, and procedures, including sponsor policies, university policies, and departmental and collegiate guidelines.

Career

The mission of the Career Development Center is to support the Enrollment Services and Student Success mission and the University’s academic mission of educating men and women of all ages in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs.

Campus life

Situated on a hill top, Marywood's scenic 115-acre campus is part of an attractive residential area of the city of Scranton in northeastern Pennsylvania. With a population of 75,000, Scranton is the sixth-largest city in Pennsylvania and is the county seat of Lackawanna County. Marywood has the advantage of being close to major cities of the northeast:

  • 2 1/2 hours to Philadelphia
  • 4 hours to Washington, D.C.
  • 5 1/2 hours to Boston

Sports facilities

Outdoor athletic facilities include six tennis courts, a sand volleyball court and basketball courts. The baseball and softball fields were named the top college fields in the country in 2016 by the Sports Turf Managers Association and the multipurpose natural grass field has undergone a major renovation which includes laser-leveling, an irrigation system and a new grass mixture.
