Founded in 1826, Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is the oldest continuously degree-granting college of art and design in the nation.
With art and design programs ranked in the top ten by U.S. News and World Report, MICA is pioneering interdisciplinary approaches to innovation, research, and community and social engagement. Alumni and programming reach around the globe, even as MICA remains a cultural cornerstone in the Baltimore/Washington region, hosting hundreds of exhibitions and events annually by students, faculty and other established artists.
Research at MICA explores the ways creative practice and scholarship have significant and measurable impact on culture, society, communities, policy, commerce, education and health.
The Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development's mission is to foster the professional growth of MICA students and alumni. The Center strives to help students and alumni succeed in their chosen career paths by offering a variety of programs, services, and resources.
The office offers individual support to students to assist them in succeeding within an art college environment, including consultation on medical and personal issues affecting academic performance. Students find that Student Affairs is a helpful place to ask general questions and determine what type of assistance might be available to them. The Office of Student Affairs also coordinates the resolution of student disciplinary cases.
Over the years, MICA has been able to expand and build its residential program. The College has broadened its housing program to over 1000 beds and now offers a holistic residential experience to meet the demand our students have been asking for. As a result all MICA Foundation and Sophomore students will be required to live in on-campus housing.
Whether you are new or returning, there is a lot to catch up with at Decker Library - - new books, films/videos, journals, databases, & more. Here are ways to improve your own or your students’ research skills.
Laptop computers are the ideal computer to bring along to student housing. They take up very little space, can be carried to class when needed, and are most adaptable to life on campus and for travel. In general, we recommend a Macintosh laptop since that is the standard computer for most of our labs and classrooms and most faculty at MICA use them as well.
MICA offers its Basic Injury and Sickness Plan for students who are in need of coverage. All MICA students with a minimum of 9 credit hours are required either to enroll in this plan OR to provide proof of other health insurance coverage. Students who enroll in the Basic Injury and Sickness Plan will receive insurance cards within two to three weeks after the initial enrollment date.
Freshmen and new Transfer students generally live in Founders Green. Founders Green offers a unique, artist-friendly living environments designed to support your artistic endeavors. Depending on availability, new transfer students may also be placed in Meyerhoff House or Gateway with other upper-class students. The staff and services of the Office of Residence Life & Off-Campus Housing are always available to assist you and we encourage you to explore our facilities and programs.
