The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) offers high-quality U.S. education that is accredited both in the United States and in Bulgaria. History

Founded in 1991, the American University in Bulgaria is the first American-style, liberal arts undergraduate education institution in Eastern Europe. The university is a cooperative venture established with the support of the U.S. and Bulgarian governments, the Open Society Institute, the City of Blagoevgrad, and the University of Maine. 

Education

AUBG is a leading liberal arts college offering its international students an unparalleled American education in the English language in Eastern Europe. AUBG faculty members are high achievers, recruited from the world’s top schools. In addition to a wide variety of classes and programs, students benefit from field trips, guest speakers, simulations, and projects, all designed to provide them with cutting edge knowledge and experiences. Students select classes from a diverse range of subjects and have opportunities to conduct interdisciplinary research. Our programs cross boundaries and foster out-of-the-box thinking, while allowing students to achieve a great degree of specialization in their chosen major(s).

Research

Students participate in conferences and competitions worldwide, such as the Carroll Round International Student Research conference at Georgetown University, USA and the annual Microsoft's Imagine Cup competition. The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program has repeatedly recognized AUBG students’ potential. AUBG hosts its own research conference every year, where students and faculty present research projects.

Career

Approximately 5,000 alumni have graduated from AUBG over the years, with 99.8 % employed or enrolled in grad school within a few months of graduation. Further, 65% of students receive more than one job offer or higher degree program acceptance letter upon graduation. AUBG alumni excel in professionalism, discipline and expertise—all gained through a skills-oriented education and score remarkable compensation results. Approximately 20 % of graduates earn more than $100,000/year and over 20 % of alumni from 1995-2005 who are currently working in the US earn more than $250,000/year.

Student services

AUBG offers its students a vast array of services.  The Career Center assists students at all levels in the exploration career-related issues and concerns. The International Students Office provides support in the visa process and organizes diversity trainings throughout the year. The Writing Center assists AUBG students from all areas of study with their writing. Students with disabilities are welcome in the University community, and the University makes reasonable efforts to accommodate them. AUBG provides opportunities for students to study abroad through the ERASMUS+ program and the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP). 

Housing services

All undergraduate students are required to live on campus as part of the university mission. Since our students come from over 40 countries, living in halls feels like being part of a mini map of the world! In this safe, secure and comfortable environment, lifelong friendships are born and minds are opened amid diversity and mutual respect. The residence halls are a smoke-free environment and disability accessible. Activity areas include aerobic rooms, music practice rooms, multipurpose rooms, billiard and ping pong areas, several television lounges, outside decks, kitchens, and cafes. All of our residence halls are secured 24 hours with a security guard.

Library services

Panitza Library is one of the largest English-language library on the Balkans. Its collection consists of over 250,000 print and electronic resources. Apart from that, the library provides access to thousands of top-library collections around the world via the Interlibrary Loan service. Library’s innovative Information Literacy program helps students develop their own research skills.

ICT services

Computing services are an integral part of the university and are intended to meet

students' academic computing needs. The Office of Communications and Computing (OCC) maintains a number of computer labs that are accessible to students, as well as the campus network and Wi-Fi services and hardline Ethernet available in the Residence Halls. The OCC team members help students with computer problems.

Medical services

The Health services available on campus from a licensed GP include: routine physical exams and health evaluations, lab tests, treatment for medical problems, consultations on variety of health-related issues, immunizations and health education. Equipment for some basic diagnostic and lab tests is available on site. When necessary, students are referred for special tests.

Campus life

The campus is divided into two locations: the Main Building, located on Blagoevgrad's central square, and the Skaptopara Campus, located just 10 minutes’ walk from the city center. The Main Building (MB) is the original location of the University; it currently houses administrative and faculty offices and serves as one of the University's two classroom buildings. From comfortable dorms to the award-winning building of the America for Bulgaria Student Center, and the largest English-language library in Southeast Europe, AUBG students enjoy a safe, world-class residential campus. It includes three residence halls; Balkanski Academic Center.

Sports facilities

AUBG students have one of the best university gymnasiums in Europe. This outstanding venue is equipped for a variety of sports - soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis and handball, and is open for students to train individually or in groups. A workout gym, situated on the basement floor of ABF Student Center offers a variety of cardio equipment, training machines and free weights to those who love to stay in shape. In true American university style, we also play American football and baseball. The the ski resorts of Bansko, Pamporovo and Borovets are within a few hours’ drive. Yoga, tae kwon do, softball, karate, skiing, hiking, aerobics, boxing and kickboxing are among the sports practiced by AUBGers. 

Student clubs

AUBG students can join a club, a student media, a sports team, or an activity such as theater, musical, AUBG Choir, debating, Model United Nations simulations, and public service. In fact, there are more than 30 student clubs they can choose from. They can practice leadership in the Student Government, keep the campus informed through student media or put on plays and musicals. AUBG hosts chapters of international organizations, such as People to People International, AIESEC, the Phi Beta Delta Honor Society, and the Association for Computing Machinery. Social and sports organizations, such as the AUBG Olympics, Basketball Club, Debate Club, Chess Club, Women in Business Club are also available.

Accreditation

The American University in Bulgaria is in the unique position of being accredited both in the United States (by the New England Commission of Higher Education, formerly the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.) and in Bulgaria (by the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation). AUBG is chartered as an institution of higher education by an act of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.
