You've come to a special place. We believe that Santa Monica College offers an outstanding and unique educational experience. We also believe that we provide the community a wealth of resources.

History

The end of the Roaring Twenties ushered in the Great Depression, the first Academy Awards were held, and a certain Santa Monica Junior College opened its doors to 153 students. Evolving missions led to new names — “Santa Monica City College” — and eventually “Santa Monica College,” to reflect the College’s service to the Westside, and to the Greater Los Angeles.

Education

We also pride ourselves on preparing students for careers of the 21st century – in such fields as nursing and health care, solar technology and other “green” careers, entertainment technology, computer technology, early childhood education, business, graphic design and other occupations.

Research

Opened in 1929 with just 153 students. It has now grown to a thriving campus with approximately 34,000 students and offerings in more than 80 fields of study.

We have an impressive academic record. We are the leader among the state's 112 community colleges in transferring students to the University of California, University of Southern California and other four-year campuses.

Student services

Numerous student services are available at Santa Monica College to help students achieve their goals and add something extra to their college experience. These services and resources are designed to help students identify and move forward toward their personal, career, and educational objectives.

Housing services

Comfortable, secure housing is an important concern for our international students. Although SMC does not have a student dormitory, the IEC, on the 3rd Floor of SMC’s Student Services Building, is happy to assist you with the many housing options available in the area.Because Santa Monica is a desirable beach destination with a world-renowned vibrant community, housing options tend to be on the more expensive side. Don’t worry! Neighboring locales like West Los Angeles, Sawtelle, Mar Vista and Westwood are all within an easy commute and offer a large array of less expensive accommodations.

Medical services

The SMC Health Services Center provides primary health care services to currently enrolled Santa Monica College students who had paid the California State mandated health fee.

We focus on health promotion, prevention of illness, referrals for needed services, health and nutrition education.

Campus life

Santa Monica College offers a wide range of campus amd teaching resources programs that can help our students and faculty achieve a high level of success both on and off campus.

Accreditation

Santa Monica College – a two-year community college accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges

Great academic support and flexible learning.

I am really satisfied with the academic resources and the support from professors at Santa Monica College. The Medical Office Administration program provides very practical knowledge for my future career. The online learning flexibility is a huge help for international students like me.

Santa Monica College staff really want you to succeed

I think this is a great school. Unfortunately some teachers aren't so tech savvy, so it is good to be aware of that, whether it was lost papers or overall last communication. If you are getting started out maybe you've been out of high school for a few years or maybe you want to raise your GPA Santa Monica College is a great place to go to. Some of my best years, and my best teachers were at Santa Monica College. On the most part they really want to help you succeed and get an A and I think that those are very important qualities

Santa Monica College

It's a really good school overall, but you do have to seek out the counselors who genuinely care, it can be difficult, but I was lucky to find the support I needed. EOPS was a big help for me. Like most places, some teachers were great and others not so much. Still, I enjoyed my time there, especially because I got to meet some great people.
