History
Through the merger of the Stuttgarter Hochschulen für Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen and für Druck und Medien the Hochschule der Medien (HdM) was found on September 1st, 2001.
Education
Hochschule der Medien is a public university (funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg) which teaches media specialists. Since September 1st, 2001, Hochschule der Medien has brought together the combined know-how of the former Fachhochschule für Druck und Medien (HDM) – a traditional educational institution for printing- and media-technologies - and Hochschule für Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen (HBI).
Hochschule der Medien covers a broad spectrum of media expertise: from printed media to electronic media, from design to business administration, from library science to advertising, from content for media to packaging technology, from computer science to information science to publishing and electronic media.
Research
The Information Experience and Design (IXD) Research Group at Stuttgart Media University aims to make experiences with interactive representations of information more enjoyable and motivating. Its research activities focus on understanding the needs and behavior of users, on developing evaluation methodology, and on improving the user-centered design of interactive systems.
Career
HdM has established a new Career Center with JobTeaser, a company that offers recruitment services for universities all over Europe, in April 2019. The Career Center helps students during their search for jobs and starting their career. Furthermore, it offers companies the possibility to present themselves as an attractive employer.
After registration, you can use the Career platform and its wide range offerings for free. Chose between up-to-datedness, type of employment, occupations field, place of work, and apply directly at the company.

Student services
The International Office at the Hochschule der Medien serves as a contact point for international visiting scholars and employees (Post Doc, professors) and their families. We advise in all non-academic matters and see ourselves as a central point of contact both before the entry, on arrival, during and at the end of the stay, as well as after the departure. In addition to its own services, the International Office can assist in connecting visiting scholars and employees within the university as well as all important institutions outside the university.
Housing services
Since finding accommodation in Stuttgart can prove quite difficult, we strongly advise you to apply for student housing. The Studierendenwerk Stuttgart owns and maintains several student dorms in Stuttgart, and most of our exchange students will usually be located at the Filderbahnplatz in Stuttgart-Möhringen or in Esslingen. Both student villages can be easily reached by public transport.
Library services
The HdM library is a specialized scientific library. It procures, archives, makes accessible and transmits specialized information in both printed and digital media. Its information portals and catalogs provide access to world-wide resources to both teachers and students, for research and teaching.
Campus life
High above the basin of Stuttgart, right on the campus of the district Stuttgart-Vaihingen. Here you find Hochschule der Medien (HdM). On the outskirts of the state capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg, students can enjoy the conveniences of the Swabian region. Resting areas are in short walking distances from the campus: „Rotwildpark“ with „Bärenseen“ and „Bärenschlössle“ ensure a vivid connection to nature.
