History

The concept for Virginia Wesleyan College began in 1959 when Methodist minister Joseph S. Johnston proposed a four-year, private college—the first of its kind in South Hampton Roads. Within two years of planning, the school had a name, a charter, and an expanding body of supporters from the United Methodist Church and the regional business community.

They emerge from this quest not only with papers, posters, and presentations, but also with new knowledge and a deeper understanding of their fields.

Housing services

There are 2 villages on campus with residence halls, classrooms and faculty offices in the same building, fostering VWU's close-knit community.

Library services

The collection emphasizes topics related to the Center’s mission, including constitutional law, religious freedom and church-state relations, religion and law, the role of religion in public and political life, and the global dimensions of religious freedom, including international human rights. It also includes books on world religions, theology and religious studies, philosophy, history.

ICT services

Students, faculty and staff are assigned password protected computer accounts while they are associated with Virginia Wesleyan University. These passwords are account specific, give access to personal information and should be safeguarded. For security purposes, the initially assigned passwords must be changed. Passwords must meet the following complexity requirements.

Medical services

Virginia Wesleyan University is partners with Sentara Medical Group in the management of the Student Health Clinic.  Because of Sentara’s trusted leadership in the healthcare community, VWU students conveniently receive access to the best care available in Hampton Roads.

Campus life

Virginia Wesleyan’s campus is small by design, creating an intimate learning environment. Inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s concept of the academic village, the VWU campus is comprised of four villages.

Sports facilities

The Batten Fitness Center, covering a total of 5,000 square feet, offers endless opportunities for VWU community members to begin or continue their personal fitness quest. The center offers a variety of popular workout equipment from nationally recognized leaders in the fitness industry such as Matrix, Rouge, Precor, and Star Trac.

Student clubs

Beneath our modest size, there are more than 50 clubs and organizations on the Virginia Wesleyan campus, including some that are bound to catch your interest. From our award-winning newspaper The Marlin Chronicle to academic honor organizations and Greek Life, there's something for everyone. And, if there's something you feel passionate about that's not represented, you're welcome to start an organization to pursue your interest.

Accreditation

Virginia Wesleyan University is one of more than 90 senior colleges and universities in the United States recognized as United Methodist-related by the University Senate of the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Church. VWC was chartered in 1961 by a grant from the Virginia Annual Conference of the Methodist Church to create a church-related liberal arts college that would encourage critical and independent thinking among students of all religious and cultural backgrounds. Rooted in these traditions, Virginia Wesleyan offers rigorous academic training, while, at the same time, encouraging students to become ethical, actively engaged citizens.
