The University is located up on a bluff in a residential neighborhood overlooking the Willamette River and the city of Portland. The school’s location also is the inspiration for its nickname, “The Bluff.”

History

In the 1930s, the University's name was changed to the University of Portland, the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing became part of the University as the College of Nursing, and the School of Business was created.

In 1948, the School of Engineering was created. The University established its Graduate School in 1950 and the School of Education in 1962.

Education

University of Portland is Oregon’s only comprehensive university with schools of business, education, engineering, nursing, a College of Arts and Sciences, and a graduate school. There are more than 40 undergraduate programs and 30 minors, as well as 18 graduate programs, and more than 1,300 courses. The University features small class settings (12:1 student-faculty ratio) and award-winning faculty. German professor Laura McLary was named the 2015 Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the University was one of only 14 schools nationwide to be named a top producer of both student and faculty Fulbright awards in 2015-2016.

Research

Undergraduate research is a student-faculty collaboration to examine, create, and share new knowledge or works in ways commensurate with practices in the discipline. In many instances, the student is joining the faculty member in research that is a part of the faculty member’s scholarship agenda. In addition to exposing students to an enhanced pedagogical environment, these collaborations will assist students in honing their skills and discerning their career path and future direction.

Career

The Career Center provides services and resources to all students and alumni. Our staff meet with students and alumni to help identify skills, interests and values as well as explore career opportunities.

UPO review

The curriculum in medical biotechnology has been comprehensive and enriching, allowing me to deepen my understanding of the molecular aspects of disease while also addressing important public health issues. The faculty are knowledgeable, supportive, and passionate about their subjects, which has made learning both engaging and inspiring.
