University of Saint Mary of the Lake had its beginning in 1844 as St. Mary’s College. Founded by the first bishop of Chicago, Bishop William J. Quarter, D.D., St. Mary’s College was granted a charter by the State of Illinois, with power “to confer…such academical or honorary degrees as are usually conferred by similar institutions.” Chicago welcomed St. Mary’s as higher learning in the city.
In a given year, the campus serves approximately 1,000 full and part-time students in its degree and certificate programs. The Conference Center provides training and development services to approximately 35,000 individuals.

Seminarians at Mundelein focus on their vocation to the priesthood through intense prayer and study. Fraternity among seminarians is encouraged through numerous campus amenities.
Our campus is home to Mundelein Seminary, the major seminary and school of theology for the Archdiocese of Chicago and beyond for nearly a century.
Located just north of Chicago, it is home to more than 100 seminarians from nearly 30 dioceses across the country and around the world. Solidly grounded in prayer, pastoral formation and rigorous academic training, Mundelein Seminary’s distinctive curriculum includes an innovative Teaching Parish Program, two full-time internships, and a study-pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada, and the following degree programs are approved:
