UWest was incorporated as “Hsi Lai University” in 1990 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and opened its doors in spring 1991. The university is a pioneering partnership between Chinese and American Buddhists to establish an American university integrating liberal arts traditions and Buddhist wisdom.

The Office of International Student Services serves the individual needs of international (F-1) students attending UWest, including helping students adapt to their new environment and serving as a liaison between international students and campus and community groups. We want to ensure that you make a smooth and painless transition, academically and personally, to attending school in America.
Our office acts as the primary resource in issuing I-20’s and official documents required by foreign governments as well as providing updates to ever-changing immigration regulations.We have a range of accommodation options on offer. Applications for accommodation open on 10 June 2022.Once you have accepted your offer you will be eligible to start the process towards making an application for your accommodation. You will be able to create your account on our accommodation portal from 21 March 2022.As allocations will not be made until after the UCAS deadline of 9 June 2022, you can expect to hear from us regarding your allocation from mid-June onwards.
University of the West Library is an academic library that provides services to UWest students, faculty, and staff. Visitors to our campus should plan to come during office hours (M-F 9am-6pm) and register at the front desk of the administration building. Our stacks are open for perusal during office hours to registered visitors.
UWest’s campus is a reflection of our core values: diverse, vibrant, contemplative, and joyful. The grounds are spacious, but intimate, perched on a lush hillside looking out on the San Gabriel Mountains. The campus is located in the city of Rosemead, approximately 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The surrounding community offers many culturally diverse restaurants, shopping destinations, and entertainment opportunities.
The gym is equipped with a variety of exercise equipment including, but not limited to: treadmills, elliptical machines, and weight machines and benches. The recreation center offers all your favorite table games: table tennis, billiards, foosball table soccer, and air hockey. Also available to students are: basketballs, volleyball equipment, badminton equipment, card games, and board games.The swimming pool is located between the two residential halls and is generally available everyday between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Students are not allowed to use the swimming pool at any other times. Students should refer to posted signs around the pool area for rules about safety and usage.

Our students have the opportunity to join any of our wide variety of student organizations—from Martial Arts to Music to Badminton.University of the West has received the WASC Senior College and University Commission’s action letter announcing their decision to reaffirm UWest’s accreditation for the period of seven years.
