History

Our story began in 1963, when the Milton S. Hershey Foundation gave $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school in Hershey. We were the first medical school in the nation to have a dedicated Department of Humanities and a Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Education

At Penn State College of Medicine, we are committed to enhancing health by preparing the next generation of clinicians, educators and scientists to be the leaders and change agents of 21st-century medicine and research.We will meet this goal through the education of medical and nursing students, basic science graduate students, medical residents, medical and postdoctoral fellows, students in other healthcare-related professions and practicing health professionals.

Research

Penn State College of Medicine has nationally recognized investigators advancing the understanding of health sciences across a broad continuum of research types:

  • Basic: Investigative research that advances our scientific understanding of issues affecting health
  • Clinical: Medical research directly involving patients that seeks to better understand and manage human illnesses
  • Translational: Research that applies the discoveries made by basic research investigators to studies with patients or to best practices in the practice of medicine
  • Health Services: Research that examines the health care system and access to care, and the effect that care has on patients

Housing services

All apartments contain features such as air conditioning, wall-to-wall carpet, electric heat, fully electric kitchen, refrigerator, and stove. Cable television is available by arrangement with our Cable TV vendor. Local area telephone service is also provided to University Manor tenants. There is no charge for on-campus telephone service or local telephone service.

Library services

The Harrell Health Sciences Library: Research and Learning Commons is part of Penn State University Libraries, among the top 10 North American research libraries as ranked by the Association of Research Libraries.The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library is central to the provision of biomedical information resources and expertise in support of the education, research, patient care.

ICT services

All University Manor Apartments provide both wired and wireless data connectivity through AT&T Wireless Services. 

Medical services

We offer a variety of wellness programs focused towards weight management & nutrition, and emergency preparedness training. Employees are also offered free flu shots and tobacco cessation courses. 

Sports facilities

Fitness and physical activity classes are available at many campuses. In addition, some campuses offer discounts on gym memberships and access to recreational facilities. 

Student clubs

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a group of students made up of elected and appointed students who help run student life at Penn State College of Medicine. The GSA helps to facilitate communication between the student body and program administration, as well as coordinate events such as the annual Research Forum to provide educational opportunities for all members of the Penn State College of Medicine community. Members of the GSA also try to help new students adjust to graduate school life through social and academic services.
