About

History

Founded on March 7, 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth (1817–1901) of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, ‘The Western University of London Ontario’ opened its doors to students for the first time in 1881 with four faculties – Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine.

 In 1916, the current campus was purchased from the Kingsmill family, and in 1923 the university was renamed The University of Western Ontario.

Education

Since that first class graduated in 1883, the university has become a vibrant centre of learning. Through 12 faculties and three affiliated university colleges, Western today offers its 36,000-plus students more than 400 specializations, majors and minors.

Western ranks as one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities. From fundamental to applied discovery and other scholarly activities, its scholars advance knowledge that provides tangible benefits for the economic, social, health and cultural development of citizens in London, in Canada and around the world.

Services

Student services

Student Central offers a wide variety of services for current students, future students, alumni, staff, and faculty. Services are offered in person, by telephone, by e-mail, or online.  Student Central services include:

  • Providing information on undergraduate admissions and recruitment, student records, course registration, OSAP, forms of financial assistance, scholarships, tuition and other fees, exams, and graduation;
  • Processing tuition fee payments;
  • Distributing government loans and other forms of financial aid;
  • Assisting with course registration;
  • Producing transcripts and official Western letters;
  • Completing various third-party forms;
  • Producing Western ONEcards (photo ID cards).

Housing services

Our on-campus residences offer a variety of layouts for every lifestyle, all with similar amenities. No matter what building you live in, you’ll become a member of a welcoming community with a unique culture and traditions passed down over many years. ICT services

Western Technology Services at Western is committed to providing high-quality, cost-effective services.   WTS offers a wide range of information technology-related services and solutions in support of the campus community. 

Medical services

Student Health Services is an appointment based medical clinic for all registered part-time and full-time students at Western and affiliated colleges.  Urgent problems such as infections or injuries can often be seen the same day.  Appointments can also be booked for non-urgent medical issues. Patients may see a physician of a specific gender and may also ask to see the same doctor for each visit.

Sports facilities

With the Western Mustangs constantly bringing trophies and awards back to campus, athletics, recreation, and wellness have been a huge part of Western's proud history since 1878. But you don't have to be an athlete to stay fit - visit the Campus Recreation Center for aquatics, dance and classes, to sign up for and compete in intramural sports.
