History
St. Matthew’s University was established in 1997. Since then, over 2,000 students have earned their MD or DVM degree . Our successful graduates have gone on to practice at some of the most outstanding facilities in the US and Canada.
Education
Our MD program consists of two years of Basic Sciences followed by two years of Clinical Rotations. The Basic Sciences program is designed to develop your knowledge of the human body and the effects disease has on it. You’ll learn through a series of labs, lectures and clinical skills training. After Basic Sciences you will transition to teaching hospitals in the U.S. and Canada where you will do Clinical Rotations in the core subject areas followed by electives.
Our DVM program consists of a 3 years of Basic Sciences curriculum where students will learn key elements of veterinary physiology, anatomy, immunology, parasitology and much more.
Career
At St. Matthew’s we do everything we can to ensure your success by supporting all aspects of your education and life. For both the MD and DVM programs you will be taught in small classrooms by an expert and dedicated faculty. In addition, student mentors are there for you to help adjust to the rigors of school and share their best practices and knowledge.
At SMUSOM,you will participate in a unique first semester Student Development course, offering study skills, exam strategies, peer support, and stress management. The SMUSOM curriculum is a proven integrated, discipline-based program that coupled with comprehensive USMLE preparation has enabled our students to average a 95% first time USMLE Step One pass rate.

Housing services
During your first semester, you’ll be required to stay in our St. Matthew’s University Residence Hall. It is a beautiful and located two miles from campus with bus service provided several times per day.
The housing market on Grand Cayman is strong and presents many opportunities for student tenants to find homes. Most rental units are located in areas such as Seven Mile Beach, George Town and South Sound. They come furnished (i.e., stocked with standard hard and soft furnishings, such as beds, tables, appliances, couches, window dressings, etc.) or fully furnished (i.e., everything but your own clothes and personal belongings is included).

Our campus has a fully air-conditioned library containing all the relevant texts needed for your MD or DVM program.

Medical services
The Cayman Islands have one of the best healthcare systems in the world which includes three state-of-the-art hospitals. In the unlikely event that you fall ill, you’ll be living on an island with one of the highest ratios of physicians to its population in the Caribbean.
Campus life
Our campus is located in Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. Surrounded by local restaurants and within walking distance of the beach, the St. Matthew’s campus is in the perfect location. You will be able to take advantage of fully air-conditioned classrooms, a library and student lounges. The campus also has a dedicated test center which simulates the conditions of the USMLE Step 1 exam to ensure you can practice before taking the actual exam.
Student clubs
The School of Medicine has many student associations for you to get involved in including American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Canada Key, Indian Student Association, Research Organization, St. Matthew’s University Circle K Club and Student Government Association (SGA). The School of Veterinary Medicine also offers student associations which are a great way to learn more about the study of veterinary medicine and to make friends with your peers. Associations include American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), Coral Reef Research Club (CRRC), Student Chapter of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition (SCAAVN) and Student Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society (SVECCS).
St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine’s MD program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) which is the accrediting body for the Cayman Islands.
