In 1895, the Minnesota Legislature created the Normal School at Duluth, which was located at 2205 E. Fifth St. In 1921, the institution became the Duluth State Teachers College, and in 1947 it became a coordinate campus of the University of Minnesota.
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a comprehensive regional university. Undergraduate students can choose from 16 bachelor degrees in 87 majors and 74 minors as well as seven certificates. UMD also offers graduate programs in 25 fields, 14 minors, and four certificates. The University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus and the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, Duluth both have programs on the UMD campus.

International Student Services (ISS) is the office dedicated to serving UMD's international community. Our primary mission is to assist international students in successfully accomplishing their academic and personal goals.
UMD students live and learn together in 5 residence halls and 2 apartment complexes. Living on campus gives you easy access to your professors, your friends, and everything else UMD has to offer. In fact, UMD’s buildings are connected by concourse and skywalk, so you can go to class in your flip-flops!
The Kathryn A. Martin Library is valued as an engaged partner with the UMD community in achieving excellence in research, teaching, and learning.
The ITSS TechCenter in Kirby Plaza 165 combines our services for Help Desk, technical support, computer repair, equipment checkout, and classroom and computer lab support into one area. The TechCenter is open during University business hours and extended evening hours during the semester.
UMD's campus consists of more than 50 buildings on 244 acres overlooking Lake Superior, all built since 1948. Most UMD buildings are connected by concourses or hallways, providing easy access for students with disabilities and convenience for all students year round.
UMD is also home for the Tweed Museum of Art, the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, and the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Other facilities include the Research and Field Studies Center, Glensheen Historic Estate, the Lower Campus, the Large Lakes Observatory, and the Natural Resources Research Institute.
Being a student at UMD presents opportunities you won’t get anywhere else. Your wellbeing is important and contributes to your success as a student inside and outside the classroom. The Recreational Sports and Outdoor Program offers everything from winter camping in the BWCA to climbing frozen waterfalls at Gooseberry State Park. Join an intramural sport or try the climbing wall at the fitness center for an adventure closer to home. Should you need them, UMD also provides an on-campus health clinic, counseling services and the occasional chance to destress with pets.
UMD is just the right size for exploring. With 244 student organizations, you can find the perfect world within a world. Feel like absorbing some culture? Visit the Tweed, go to a music performance, or catch a film on campus. Head off campus to go for a hike, explore Canal Park, or see a play.
