History
Established with the vision of pursuing the advancement of learning and academic excellence, the university has been unrelenting in the pursuit of its mission of becoming a citadel of learning, a community with the trademark of excellence in teaching, research and service to humanity, a catalyst as well as an agent for development.
Education
Lagos has always enjoyed a premier and pre-eminent position in the history of education in Nigeria; notwithstanding that, the state has oftentimes been referred to as backward because of its low number of indigenous population in schools. However, as part of the effort to reverse the low school attendance trend in the state, a major step was taken to establish LASU during the Administration of Alhaji Lateef Jakande as the first Executive Governor of Lagos State.
Research
From the middle of 1984, the Lagos State Government continued to put in place machinery for the smooth the formal take-off of teaching and research activities in the new institution. The Faculties of Law and Humanities, Education and Science were established with the plan not to admit more than one thousand students.

Student services
The Administrative structure of the university has been built on a network of units and departments including the Registry, Academic Planning Unit, General Administration, Academic and Students Affairs, Senior Staff Establishment and Welfare, Junior Staff Establishment and Training. The other organs of the university administration include: Works and Services, Health Centre, Multi Media centre, Information Unit and the Security Unit.
Housing services
The Lagos State University Epe Campus, which is located on the north side of the Lekki Lagoon. It comprises of the Faculty of Engineering and School of Agriculture of Lagos State University. The Lagos State University, Epe Campus is a fully residential campus and was born out of the insufficiency of the Ojo campus to accommodate the Faculty of Engineering at that time. The military barrack which is now the campus was released by the persuasion of the then military governor in the regime of Rtd. Major.Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo.
Library services
The Lagos State university Library commenced operations in November 1984 in accordance with the Edit that set up the university.Like all university libraries, it is the pivot on which all academic activities in the university hings.The provision of library services enable a student to take maximum advantage of the available learning environment and to develop a life long learning skills for research and private works as well as to develop reading skills not only for academic pursuits but for recreational purposes.
ICT services
The Directorate of Information & Communication Technology Centre of Lagos State University (LASU-ICTC), was established during the reign of Professor L. A. Hussein as Vice-Chancellor in December, 2006. The framework for the Centre was done by the ICT committee that was set up in October 2005 and headed by Prof. Todonu Amosu which handed over to Prof. Tunde Fatunde.
Medical services
The Health Centre is a primary health care facility, which caters for medical needs of students, staff members and their dependants, up to four (4) members that are below 18 years old. The Health Centre consists of Medical, Environmental Health, Nursing, Pharmacy, X- ray, Medical Laboratory and Medical Record Units.
Campus life
The Lagos State University currently operates three major campuses, namely: Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe. The Ojo campus is the Main Campus and the seat of the Central Administration. It houses the faculties of Arts, Education, Law, Management Sciences, Science and Social Sciences, School of Transport, School of Communication, Centre for Environment Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED), Centre for General Nigerian Studies, Centre for Planning Studies, Information and Communication Technology Centre (ICTC), Online and Distance Learning and Research Institute (ODLRI) and Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies. The Postgraduate School is also on the Ojo Campus.
Sports facilities
LASU has a selective admission policy by entrance examination, and caters for its large student population, providing academic and non-academic facilities such as lecture halls, faculty buildings, halls of residence, conference halls, sports facilities, among others.
Student clubs
Established in 1999, LASUMSA is one of the most recognized Medical Students’ Associations (MSA) in the country with a membership strength of over 500 students who are passionate about contributing their quota to the improvement of health care delivery in Nigeria. Apart from belonging to the LASUCOM community — a community with keen interest in producing the best crop of medical professionals who can function effectively in any part of the globe
