NLSIU was the first National Law University established in India in 1986. The premier law school was set up with a mission to pioneer legal education reforms, and to anchor the transformation of the Indian legal system through research and policy interventions.
Committed to reforming legal education and the pursuit of academic excellence, NLSIU places significant emphasis on legal and policy research. Research at NLSIU is primarily carried out through its Centres, Chairs, multi-year research projects, and through individual faculty initiatives. The University’s specialised research centres have been repeatedly called upon to shape laws and improve implementation in intellectual property, child rights, and environmental laws, among many others.

NLSIU is a fully residential learning community. We aim to offer all our students the benefits of belonging to a vibrant and diverse student community – both inside and outside the classroom.Situated in Nagarbhavi, Bangalore, NLSIU sits on a lush green campus of 23 acres that offers ample space for students to unwind after a day of intense learning. The campus comprises an academic block, student hostels, faculty quarters, a state-of-the-art library, canteens, a health centre, gym facilities, and discussion rooms among other spaces for academic and community based activities.
The Sri Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library, was established with the generous assistance of Mrs. Sudha Narayanamurthy. The library is a three storied building of 30,000 sq.ft. built-up area, and houses a collection of over 70,000 volumes.
NLSIU’s sprawling 23-acre campus in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, is home to a vibrant student community that includes student associations and events. Students get to engage in moot courts and debates at a competitive level, both domestically and internationally. Equipped with a state-of-the-art library, multiple academic centres, student housing and essential facilities, the University is committed to serve as a breeding ground for future leaders.
