History
The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of the river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu during 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the Country.

Research
NIT-T strives its best to position itself at the forefront of cutting-edge research in pace with global standards. Research activities at NIT-T have been growing in all metrics with respect to the quantity and quality of researchers. There are several sponsored projects currently funded by MHRD, DST, SERB, CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, GTRE, AICTE, RGNIYD, DEITY, DAE. In addition to this, major consultancy projects with agencies like BHEL, CPW, PWD, Airport Authority of India, NLCL, CDAC are also undertaken across different departments of the Institute.
Career
The department of Training and Placement has the following functions and responsibilities:
- Nurtures Industry Institute interaction, by organizing and coordinating frequent industrial visits, inplant training and projects of industrial relevance for the students.
- Receives and forwards the feedback pertinent to curriculum improvement from the visiting companies to the faculty so curriculum follows the latest industrial trends.
- Helps every student define his/her career interest through individual expert counseling.
- Organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfill its commitment of a job to every aspirant.
- Over 220 companies participate in the placement process every year.

University Ranking
Student services
Campus Communication Services (CCS) is a service unit of the E.C.E. department that takes care of the communication needs of the campus residents. Telephone facilities have been provided in the academic departments, administrative office, hostels and in the residences. An ALCATEL 4300/S EPABX has been installed in the administrative building. This acts as the backbone for all our communication needs. The institute can be contacted through 10 dedicated DoT lines. Another set of 5 dedicated lines enables Direct Inward Dialing (D.I.D). Through D.I.D. any extension number can be contacted without routing the call through the operator.
Housing services
The institute provides excellent accommodation to its students. The students are provided with all the amenities so that their stay here becomes a worthwhile experience.
Library services
The Institute has a modern Central Library with more than two and a half lakhs of documents consisting of Technical books, reports, standards, CD-ROMS, Audio Visual Educational Cassettes, and back volumes of journals. The library subscribes to 83 periodicals (print) plus 8210+ e-Journals and 1995+ e-books besides a holding of 17690 back volumes of journals.
ICT services
The OCTAGON - Computer Center is the sterling hallmark of this campus was opened with the theme of "Dare to Dream". This center serves the campus-wide LAN in close association with the user departments. This LAN caters to about 7500 users across the campus (using Wired connection and through Wireless). It has a 10 Gbps fiber optic backbone interconnecting the departments/buildings.
Medical services
- The institute hospital is located within the campus, it is located amidst the hostel/residential zone and the academic zone.
- The NITT Hospital provides primary health care round the clock on all the days.
- NITT Hospital has casualty, OP & IP facilities, 24 hours fully equipped ambulance, 24 hours pharmacy and a clinical laboratory working during 07:00 a.m. to 09:00 p.m.
Sports facilities
The Sports Centre Which Is The Hub Of Sports Activities Was Inaugurated 1999.
The Sports Centre Is A Multi-Facility Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex Aimed At Developing Well-Rounded Personalities Of Students. The Building Has An Indoor Stadium With Two Shuttle Courts And A Fitness Centre. The Construction Of The Sports Centre Has Been Carried Out By The State P.W.D. At A Cost Of Rs. 97 Lakhs.
The outdoor stadium has a 400M track. The cricket ground here hosts matches for the city league.
Student clubs
At NITT, we firmly believe in producing well-rounded personalities, hence it isn't all work and no play at our campus. Numerous skills and talents have been unearthed from amongst our students and to allow these talents to flourish, numerous clubs have been started for like-minded individuals to meet and polish their skills. Along with that, there are social services clubs to allow students to get in touch with reality and do their bit for the upliftment of the human race.
