History
The history of BUET dates back to 1876 when the Dhaka Survey School was founded. Later in 1947, it became an engineering college and gained independent university status in 1962. It is located on a compact 83.9-acre land in the heart of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

Research
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is the pioneer of engineering research in Bangladesh. BUET researchers are working at the forefront of their fields and changing the country for the better. The faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate students regularly publish their research works in international journals and conferences. All the departments carry out their own research programs. BUET also undertakes research works sponsored by organizations, such as United Nations Organizations, Commonwealth Foundation, University Grants Commission, etc.

Housing services
There are eight residential halls for students in BUET - six for undergrad male students, one for female students and one for post-graduate students. The residential halls are considered the places where a student eats, sleeps and lays the groundwork for a lifelong friendship.
Library services
The Library, unique in character in the country provides the following educational and research facilities to the students and teachers of this university: Reading Facility, Reference, Periodicals and Research Facility, Reprographic Facility, Rental Facility, Lending Facility and Browsing Facility.
Medical services
The medical center having basic health care facilities is located in the university campus. The center is equipped with modern medical equipments. There are seven full-time doctors and seven part-time doctors in the medical center who treats and prescribes medicine. Doctors visit the residential halls and gives proper treatment to the sick students, upon requests from the hall provosts.
Campus life
The residence halls are located in a serene natural environment, engulfed in the dense greenery. All the halls are connected through neat walkways. The halls are designed to harmonize the natural nourishment of social and academic development.
Sports facilities
To keep the students fit and to provide opportunities for recreation, there are a play ground, tennis court, basketball court, squash court, and an equipped modern gymnasium in the BUET premises. The large play-ground, located in the main campus of BUET is used as a venue of annual athletics of the university. In order to improve the quality of sports for the students, the physical education department under the DSW office organizes and manages all the sports. The physical education department has a deputy director and four skilled sports teac hers. Part-time trainers are also appointed to provide training at different times.
Student clubs
There are many clubs that BUET students can join. Club activities are a great way to meet new friends, develop leadership skills and compete in a relaxed, welcoming environment. There are 29 clubs for the development of other sports, science, literature and culture. Teachers who are skilled in their respective fields are employed as moderators for the proper direction of the activities of each club. The directorate of student’s welfare arranges the annual club fair where the clubs showcase their achievements and run membership drive.
