Toi Whakaari has been nurturing performers and arts practitioners for over 50 years.

Housing services

There is no student accommodation on campus or affiliated to the School. Moststudents at Toi Whakaari obtain private rental accommodation in a house or flatin Wellington. Student Services staff will visit and assess any boarding or homestay accommodation recommended for International students.

Most of our students live in shared flats in our local area: Newtown, Berhampore, Mount Cook, and Vogeltown. There is some availability in The Cube, a Massey University hostel.

Library services

  • The Nola Millar Library is the library for Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School and is named after the school's first director. The Library is the most comprehensive specialist library of its kind in New Zealand.

  • Library opening hours are generally Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm

  • Facilities: Online catalogue and databases

ICT services

The Computer Lab and Sound Studio contain valuable assets. Procedures are necessary tosafeguard this equipment and to meet insurance requirements. Failure to comply with theserules will be viewed as a breach of School discipline.

The Computer Lab is open during normal School hours in term time, (Monday - Friday from.8am 6pm) during the evenings if Reception is attended and weekends from 8.30am5pm

Medical services

  • International students are generally not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand.
  • Students may become members of nearbyMassey University’s Health and Counselling Service and access medicalservices through them. Counselling services (via Massey Health), are free to all students.
  • International students can access doctors, nurses etc. for a subsidised fee of approximately $20

Campus life

  • Te Whaea is a large and spacious building with high, cathedral-like ceilings and purpose-built, modern facilities.Located on the site of the former Winter Show Buildings, Te Whaea is located in the inner-city suburb of Newtown on part of Wellington’s ‘green belt’ nature reserve.
  •  It’s just five minutes’ drive from the heart of the city and has ample parking. Studios, rehearsal rooms, theatres and performance spaces are available for hire.
