History
- The University of Limpopo is the result of a merger between the former Medical University of Southern Africa and the University of the North, which merger occurred on 01 January 2005.
- The extension of University Education Act of 1959 made provision for the establishment of racially exclusive universities for black South Africans. Under the provisions of the Act, the University College of the North was established about thirty kilometres from the Limpopo Province town of Polokwane on 01 August 1959.
Research
- The Department of Research Administration and Development is a key Department at the University of Limpopo (UL) reporting directly to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Partnerships, Prof Jesika Singh.
- We have oversight of research performance across the University, developing and implementing policies aligned to the University’s Strategic Plan (UL 2019 - 2023) Goal 5, which is improving the University’s research standing and status.
- The department further intends to accelerate professional, quality, efficient research output with the hope to generate funds for the university.

Housing services
- University of Limpopo has its own campus accommodation for students, for which all students in need of accommodation at UL must apply in order to get rooms.
- Those students who are not offered accommodation on campus or who prefer to stay off-campus are advised to obtain a place at University accredited off-campus residences which are privately owned.
- In the residences at UL there are house committees which see to the needs of residence students. They organise all the activities that relate to residence students. UL SRC has recently formed a day house for students who are not in UL residences. This committee oversees all the interests of off-campus students
Library services
- Users become members of the Library by registering through the library system. Students and Staff must present their current university identity card to become members of the Library.
- The student or staff card becomes the official membership card. External members must present a letter signed by an authority of the accredited institution where they are employed or registered.
Campus life
- The Campus is situated to the north-west of Pretoria. Its grounds extend over some 350 ha adjoining the Ga-Rankuwa Township and are easily accessible by roads and rail. Regular bus and taxi services operate between Pretoria and Dr George Mukhari Hospital as well as between Mabopane and Medunsa.
