History
The establishment of the CUNY Graduate Center in 1961 by the New York State Legislature, itself, had few precedents. This was to be the first publicly supported doctoral program in New York City.

With more than 30 doctoral programs and the addition of a growing number of master’s programs in cutting-edge fields; its more than 30 centers, institutes, initiatives; and the innovative Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), the Graduate Center is one of the leading Ph.D.-granting institutions in the country, educating students of diverse backgrounds from all over the world.
Research
The Advanced Science Research Center is CUNY’s premier scientific research institute. Located in a 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art building in Upper Manhattan, the CUNY ASRC fosters collaboration across disciplines and encourages groundbreaking research. Among the extraordinary resources onsite is a 5,000-square-foot cleanroom—the largest in New York City.

Located at 165 East 118th Street, the eight-story Graduate Center Apartments complex offers bright, modern and airy housing, as well as providing an easy commute to the Graduate Center for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and members of the faculty.

The GC campus is located in the heart of New York City. Campus features include:
