Since its foundation in 1966, the University of Konstanz has distinguished itself through its top-level research, excellence in teaching and studies, internationality and interdisciplinary collaboration.


The University of Konstanz is comprised of thirteen departments that are divided into three faculties: the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Politics - Law - Economics. According to its original foundation as a reform university, the University of Konstanz does not have institutes or chairs.


The University of Konstanz is a research-oriented reform university that accepts its responsibility to society by providing high-quality research and educational opportunities. It is committed to the basic idea behind a university, in that in order to generate scientific knowledge, close links between research and teaching have to be cultivated. Current and future social challenges are addressed through the university’s research and study programmes.


The University of Konstanz prides itself on providing comprehensive support to its up-and-coming talent. We support all our junior researchers as they transition into academic careers or take on leading roles in industry and society.

Student services

We are responsible for many formalities within the student status. These include the continuation of studies (re-registration), leave of absence, end of your studies (exmatriculation) and the collection of tuition and semester fees.

Housing services

Konstanz is a city with an extraordinary quality of life. Our city and surroundings are popular not only with students, but also with families and outdoor enthusiasts. Since both Switzerland and Lake Constance border Konstanz, the available living space is limited and not always inexpensive.

Library services

The Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM) is the university's central service provider for IT and library services. KIM was created by combining the library, IT Service Centre and administrative IT.

ICT services

The SysAdmin team is responsible for the departmental computer lab and provides support for all servers and networks.

Medical services

At the Welcome Center, we can help you find doctors who are able to communicate in languages other than German. Please contact us if you need information about multi-lingual doctors in Konstanz.

Student Life

Campus life

Get involved at your university: Besides studying, there are many extra-curricular opportunities to get involved in on campus. Do you play an instrument or like to act? Would you like to get politically involved? Would you like to meet new people? Whatever your interests, we’re sure that here you’ll find something to get involved in!

Sports facilities

The outdoor sports facilities are in an idyllic location near the lake and sports hall. Students and staff have convenient access to sports infrastructure and equipment, which includes the following facilities: stadium with 400 meter track, rock climbing tower, tennis courts, basketball courts, beach soccer court, archery range, high ropes course and a beach volleyball court at the water sports area. 

Student clubs

The possibilities for you to get involved are boundless: A variety of university groups provide you with opportunities to engage in the professional, political, social, religious, musical and sports activities that interest you.If you work with the student union “AStA”, you can become a part of the university’s student representation. This branch of the student representation aims to communicate the political, social and cultural interests of the student body to the university and broader community. 


Since 2 October 2014, the University of Konstanz is system accredited. As a result of a two-year long external examination, the accreditation organisation AAQ (Swiss Agency for Accreditation and Quality Assurance) certified the University of Konstanz on the basis of its quality assurance system for its ability to ensure and further develop the quality of its study programmes.
