Founded in 1991 by Heinz Bürki, IMI started in Weggis with 55 students and moved to its current campus in Kastanienbaum, on Lake Lucerne, in 1997. Today IMI is part of IMI Group AG and runs its own historic 4-star training hotel, Hotel Seeburg.
IMI offers a Certificate in International Hotel & Tourism Management, BA (Hons) degrees in International Hospitality Business Management, International Business Management and International Culinary Management, an MSc in International Hospitality Business Management, and Graduate Diplomas in hospitality and culinary arts. Short Summer and Winter Programmes are also available. Teaching combines academic study with practical training, much of it in a real hotel setting, and classes are kept small.
IMI focuses on applied research that connects teaching with the hospitality and business industry. Students work on real industry projects, case studies and final dissertations, often in collaboration with hotels and companies, helping them turn theory into practical solutions.
IMI graduates work in hotels, restaurants and international companies around the world, in roles across hospitality, business and culinary arts. Paid internships every academic year and close industry contacts give students practical experience and a strong network before they graduate.

All our Administration, Faculty and Support staff are located on our beautiful Kastanienbaum campus in the heart of Switzerland. This means students have easy access to all the IMI team and can quickly find the best person to support them in any scenario.
The IMI campus is situated on the shores of Lake Luzern with spectacular views over the Alps and the Mountains of Rigi and Pilatus. Our students are housed in comfortable rooms close to the lecture theatres, restaurants and leisure facilities.
We offer a range of different room types: singles and twins both with en-suite and shared bathrooms to cater for every need.
We are proud of our small campus, with a true family feel which allows our students to develop the caring and friendly spirit so recognisable in our graduates. A regular bus service connects you to the vibrant city of Luzern and the surrounding areas.
Our on-campus library contains all the study materials (both physical and digital) that students require to complete their assignments. The library is open each weekday in the afternoon.
We have a dedicated, on-site ICT support staff member to assist with all questions regarding WiFi, hardware, software or apps.
Our Reception is manned 24/7 by a member of the IMI team. With a range of medications available directly at Reception, we also have trained staff who can advise on the best course of action should our students experience any physical or mental health issues.
IMI's campus sits on the shores of Lake Lucerne in Kastanienbaum, framed by the Swiss Alps and just a short bus ride from the city of Lucerne. It's a quiet, close-knit setting where students study, live and spend time together, with on-campus accommodation during the study phase. Practical training also takes place at Hotel Seeburg, IMI's historic 4-star training hotel in Lucerne.
Students can stay active and unwind on campus, with a gym, table tennis, billiards, a piano and more. The lakeside location also makes it easy to enjoy swimming, hiking, cycling and winter sports nearby.
Our Student Representative Committee (SRC) organise various activities and excursions throughout the school semester. This can include a ski trip, a visit to Germany's largest theme park and our regular, on-campus student bars and events.
IMI is certified to ISO 9001 by SQS, with IQNet recognised certification, and holds the eduQua quality label for Swiss educational institutions. IMI is also a member of CHME (Council for Hospitality Management Education) and EUHOFA, the international association of hotel schools.
