Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) originated from the French speaking Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), that was founded in 1834 by a Brussels’ lawyer with Flemish roots, Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. It was his intention to create a university independent of church and state at which academic freedom would roam.
For more than 180 years VUB has helped build a better society as an innovative, free inquiring and critical thinking university. We are linked to the world from within our international capital Brussels. The VUB has 1540 rooms including 1452 single rooms, 35 double flats, 12 studios and 6 rooms for wheelchair users. These student rooms are located on and around the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Etterbeek) and the Brussels Health Campus (Jette).
The VUB University Library offers an extensive collection of newspapers, books and periodicals, in both paper and electronic format. At CAVA, the Centre for Academic and Secular Humanist Archives, you will find the heritage and archives of the liberal humanist community and of VUB.
As a new student, you must create a network identity (NetID) and a VUB email address. These enable you to access the computers and the wifi on the campus and the various VUB applications.

The hospital is part of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and is thus a university hospital. This means that it also has a teaching mission and conducts scientific research.
The faculties, services and departments of Vrije Universiteit Brussel are located on several campuses in the Brussels Capital Region: Etterbeek, Jette and Anderlecht. We also have campuses in Gooik, Leuven and Diest.

Being a student is sometimes a bit of partying. The VUB has a rich tradition of student folklore with St-Vé, the Humanistic Singing Festival, Baptism and all kinds of ludic rituals. In addition, you can just go to the legendary TD's, the numerous nice Brussels cafés or dive into some cool Brussels scenes.
All degree programmes offered by VUB are accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO), ensuring that they meet the highest predefined quality standards. Alongside this official quality control system, VUB has an internal Quality Control Commission in charge of permanently monitoring the quality of education.

The Universit� Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is one of those places that leaves a mark on you�not just academically, but culturally and personally. The atmosphere is open, diverse, and driven by a strong spirit of free inquiry. You feel it in the classrooms, in debates, and even in casual conversations around campus. Academically, ULB offers solid programs with professors who are both knowledgeable and approachable. Some courses can feel demanding, but the quality of teaching and research makes the effort worth it. The campus itself is lively, sometimes a bit chaotic, but always full of energy. One of the best parts of ULB is the international vibe. You meet people from all over the world, which adds a unique richness to the student experience. The student organizations, events, and social life are active and varied�you rarely feel bored.
I really enjoyed my time at ULB as I was offered an international program where I could study in English with other international students with no problem. French classes were also provided for free, which was very nice, as well as the gym courses for very little money, which was nice to get to know more people around the campus. I only wish a bit more integration with French-speaking students was supported as I have not met lots of locals, which would have been nice to understand a bit better the local student life.
I am really enjoying studying at the VUB! It is a very open-minded and international university where everyone can truly be themselves. The professors are approachable, and the assistants are even more: we can often even call them by their first name! I like the freedom you get to choose your own courses according to your interests, especially in Biology, where you can design your master�s programme almost entirely based on courses you really love. The campus also really feels like a real campus which I love. What I liked a bit less is the administration at the VUB, which can sometimes be confusing or difficult to understand. But I�ve also heard the same from friends at other universities, so I think that�s quite common everywhere. Overall, I would really recommend the VUB.
