Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences About

At the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), we educate tomorrow’s professionals in a wide array of fields and disciplines of higher education. With our distinct focus on applied sciences, the AUAS enables students, lecturers and researchers to develop cutting-edge – and practical – knowledge and innovations.

History

AUAS is a young organisation with a rich history, committed to the future and to innovation in Amsterdam and beyond. We have a joint Executive Board with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and this close cooperation is particularly valuable for research purposes. In 2018 we marked a milestone for the AUAS, celebrating the 25th anniversary of our institution in its current form.

Education

Our university of applied sciences consists of seven faculties. We have a total of 45,460 students and offer 92 Bachelor’s, Master’s and Associate degree programmes. We are one of the biggest employers in the field of higher education, and in Amsterdam, with some 4,066 staff members.

Research

Our research always addresses a real-life world problem from the professional field, conducted in close collaboration with both academics and professionals. Applied research is a crucial component of the many educational programmes we offer. Students work alongside professors in labs and at centres of applied research. AUAS focuses on six priority areas for research: Amsterdam creative industries, entrepreneurship, urban education, urban management, urban technology and urban vitality.

Career

AUAS programmes offer students a clear perspective of the professional field and the working environment in which their future careers will unfold. Students gain a great deal of their knowledge from practical work, via work placements, projects, research and labs.

Positive environment

I feel there is a strong sense of trust and respect between the faculty and students. The lecturers set high expectations, but they support learning with clear guidance and proven expertise. At the same time, the student community is friendly and inclusive, which makes it easy to feel comfortable and engaged on campus. Overall, it creates a positive and motivating academic environment.

Practical, intense, and truly international

Studying at the Amsterdam School of International Business has been one of the most defining experiences of my academic life. The program is very hands-on, and I quickly moved from just learning theory to applying it in real business cases, group projects, and presentations that felt close to real corporate work. What stood out most were the classes and lecturers. Many professors had industry experience, so lectures felt practical and relevant, not just textbook-based. Modules like international marketing and trade strategy challenged me to think globally and improved my confidence in decision-making and teamwork. Im especially proud of leading a project team that developed a market entry plan for a European brand. That experience sharpened my research, communication, and leadership skills. Campus life was also a big highlight. The international environment pushed me out of my comfort zone. Working with students from different cultures improved my adaptability and perspective. It honestly felt like preparing for the real global workplace every day. The workload can be demanding, but that pressure helped me grow academically and personally. I became more disciplined, more confident presenting ideas, and clearer about my career path in international business. For future students, expect practical learning, supportive lecturers, and a diverse community. If youre serious about building real-world business skills and gaining global exposure, this school will challenge you in the best way possible.
