About

Besides the research groups of ISREC (Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research) and GHI (Global Health Institute), researchers of BMI (Brain Mind Institute), IC (School of Computer and Communication Sciences), IBI (Institute of Bioengineering), SB (School of Basic Sciences) and the NIHS (Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences) are also part of our PhD program and offer exciting PhD positions to talented and ambitious young researchers.

Thirteen different engineering science programs, customised PhD programs, cutting-edge laboratories directed by internationally renowned professors, a modern, fast-developing campus spread over some 10,000m2, close ties to industry: EPFL offers an exceptional student experience to young people planning a higher education in science and technology.

The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is a teaching and a research organization with a mission in know-how transfer and research for the benefit of the society. The Vice-Presidency for Innovation and Technology Transfer (VPIV) is responsible for the coordination of all relationships between EPFL and industry. Its dedicated teams facilitate interactions between these two worlds.

Academic Requirements

Generally, candidates should apply to the doctoral program of their choice, by its fixed deadlines. However, programs sometimes also publish specific offers.

A first selection phase consists of the evaluation of your application file. Admission being extremely competitive, it is crucial to prepare it very carefully.

Your application will be submitted directly to your chosen doctoral program. A committee will evaluate and make a decision on your application, taking into account the research interests and potential thesis directors you indicate.

If you are admitted, you will have up to one year to enrol. If you are being hired by an EPFL lab, your contract will be organized during this time. Some time will also be needed to sort out any visa and residence permit requirements.

Your application file must entirely be completed online, via the online application form. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application (including recommendations) is fully completed before the relevant deadline.

Application Form & Enclosures

You will first have to fill in the online application form. You will be asked to provide information on your personal details and your academic background, the doctoral program you wish to apply to, as well as your statement of objectives and the contact details of three referees.

You will be asked to upload a pdf version of the following documents:

  • Official transcripts of diplomas and grades from all academic institutions of higher education you list in your application (after and not including high-school)
  • Certified translations of diplomas and grades into English if not originally in French, German, Italian or English
  • Statement of objectives
  • A copy of your passport or official identity document showing your name in full

Once you have uploaded all these documents and confirmed all the details you have provided, you will be asked to complete and submit your application by validating it.

Please note that your candidacy will only be considered if your complete application is validated within the online system by the date of the selected deadline (including the recommendations). Material sent by email or fax will not be considered
