Through the Federal Commission for Scholarships, the Swiss government offers a limited number of grants to foreign students (3rd cycle students: predoctoral (after MA) doctoral or postdoctoral research) wishing to do part of their training at a Swiss university.

Description

PhD Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships awarded to obtain an EPFL title, being below EPFL standards of remuneration for doctoral students, the thesis director will have to secure adequate funding to complete the candidate’s salary. Postdoctoral Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships and Research scholarships don’t need additional funding (except for a Visiting Doctoral Student research scholarship).

Benefits

The scholarship is worth CHF 1,920.-/month for 1 year and is renewable for up to 3 years (conditional upon excellent performance). The supervisor needs to guarantee funding for the 4th year.

Additional benefits:

Half-tax travel card (demi-tarif): will be refunded.

Health Insurance is paid by the scholarship program if the beneficiary arrives on the date agreed by the FCS. For people arriving before September, health insurance is not covered.

Return flights will be reimbursed according the FCS rules, up to 6 months after the end of the scholarship.

Housing is guaranteed for scholarship holders (for one persone at the arrival, for the first year only, in one of the student’s homes.

Eligibility

Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The short-listed applications are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

  • Candidate profile
  • Quality of the research project or artistic work
  • Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.
