About

Objectives

Our aim is that the future PhDs will have the capacity to lead both research and technological innovation in the fields indicated above. The PhD studies in ‘Computational and Applied Physics' are being participated by university professors and researchers from the Department of Applied Physics and the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) together with researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences. Research related to the PhD studies is enclosed in the fields of Physics, Mathematics and Engineering.

PhD studies described here have been the object of an adaptation process to the ESSE (European Space of Superior Education), so our general objective is that students finishing its PhD within our program acquire a maturity in their research training according to the so called Dublin descriptors:

  • Students should prove a systematic understanding of a given research area and the master in the abilities and research techniques of such area.
  • Students should prove their capacity of think, design, practice and assume a substantial research process with full academic rigor.
  • Students should contribute by original research to the widening of the frontiers of knowledge, by developing substantial parts of a research topic merited to be published in reference national and international journals.
  • Students should be able to perform critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
  • Students should communicate appropriately about their areas of knowledge with their colleagues, with the academic community and generally with the society.
  • Students should acquire learning abilities which allow them the promotion of technological, social and cultural advances within academic and professional contexts.
Justification of the necessity of the programme

PhD studies are a fundamental part of the University education. It's University's responsibility to effectively provide and manage the necessary resources to offer good PhD programmes. The University is made up by different Departments who usually take this initiative. It is naturally the normal and common process used in the other European and American Universities, because the PhD is connected to the research and it directly depends on the different Research Groups from one Department. Following this general argument, we can justify why a PhD Programme is basically linked to two Physics Departmnet at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

The two Departments form a seventy doctors' team put into eleven research fields, qualified to bring up new doctors at our knowledge area. Most of these groups, of which research activity can be looked up at the website, have the acknowledgement from consolidated groups at Generalitat de Catalunya. From the beginning of the PhD Programme, we have already brought about thirty doctors up, whose still do research at our University or at Spanosh or foreign Universities. The young researchers education also revitalize our research groups. Without this input, our research tasks decline and they are even impossible: the exclusive dedication to a particular research topic makes progress possible in many different directions. It is only possible with the research grant holders. Therefore, the profit is mutual: students learn to do research and we, the teachers, use their enthusiasm and initiative.

Places 15

Main qualifications required for admission

Sciences degree, engineer, master in Computational and Applied Physics, or similar graduates.

Criteria for selection and for assessing student's merits

To enter the doctoral program in the period of research is necessary to satisfy any of the following conditions (according to Decree 99/2011 of 28 January 2011):

  • Having an official Bachelor (or equivalent) and Master.
  • Having an official university degree from a Spanish institution or from an Institution within the EEES that can enable to access the Master studies in accordance with the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007 and having a minimum 300 ECTS in the series of official studies, of which at least 60 must be Master's level.
  • Having a university degree from an educational system outside the EEES, after checking the UPC Doctorate Office that such degree is at the same level of training of Master's degree in Spain. The degree must give access to PhD studies, in the country issuing the title. This admission does not imply in any case the approval or recognition of previous qualifications. It has no other effect than to take the studies for the doctoral degree.
  • Having an official Spanish Bachelor the duration of which, according to the rules of European Community law, is at least 300 credits. These graduates might be required to take additional courses about training in research methodologies, except in the case that in the curriculum of the degree those research training credits were included; these credits must be equivalent to training in research studies from Master's degree.
  • Have another Spanish PhD title.

Requisites for complementary methodological or scientific training courses (the official master's degree programme that these courses belong to must be specified)

The knowledge required would be basically programmed within the "Computational and Applied Physics" Master, within other similar ones, or by specific seminars from the Programme.

Procedure established for monitoring students

The monitoring of students will follow the procedures indicated in the RD99/2011, due by the Ph.D. tutor and/or director and from the Academic Comission of the program.
