The idea of a merger was first presented in autumn 2005 by the then rector of the University of Art and Design, Yrjö Sotamaa, in his opening speech for the academic year. A more concrete plan for the establishment of a new university was presented in February 2007, in the memorandum of the working group led by Secretary of State Raimo Sailas.

Rental housing is mainly available on the private housing market. Available housing is advertised online (various rental apartment forums), in newspapers and through agents. Finding housing can be time-consuming as advertisements are often in Finnish.A minimum rental period is usually 12 months for a private market apartment. This means that you are not allowed to terminate the rental agreement during the first year.Degree students at Aalto University are, for the most part, responsible for arranging their own accommodation. In order to apply for student housing in the Helsinki region, fill in the application forms directly on the webpage of HOAS and/or AYY.
The Aalto University Library is a scientific library open to the public, housing extensive and diverse electronic and print collections in all the disciplines taught at the university. The Aalto University Library comprises three campus libraries: Arabia (arts and design), Otaniemi (technology) and Töölö (economics).
Students have access to Aalto University email, calendar and various Wiki services, such as StudentWiki and blogs. StudentWiki is suited to collaboration, communications and other requirements of group work. Aalto University students can also publish their own blogs using the Aalto Blogs service. These and many other services can be accessed using your Aalto University username and password.
Finnish Student Health Service, FSHSFinnish Student Health Service, FSHS, provides students with preventive health care, medical care, mental health care and dental health care. FSHS covers all university students in 16 Finnish cities and services are produced at 16 health centers.
It has been decided that Aalto University will centralize its operations gradually to the Otaniemi campus area. The centralized campus supports boundary-breaking research and artistic activities by enabling versatile and active forms of interaction. The campus will be built gradually in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner. The aim is to create a vibrant and interactive research and studying environment where work, studying, recreational activities and everyday life will naturally be connected to each other.
