The School was founded in 1916 as the School of Oriental Studies. It took its present title in 1938, by which time it had also established itself as a centre for African Studies. It moved to its present site in 1941.
More than 350 undergraduate degree combinations are available in social sciences, arts, humanities and languages, all with a distinctive regional focus and global relevance. And over 115 postgraduate programmes.

A range of student services exist to help you during your time at SOAS. They provide an invaluable source of advice and support and are available to all students of the School.
Every student is assigned a personal tutor to answer any academic related questions or concerns. The Learning and Teaching Unit (LTU) provides additional support to make sure you have the best opportunity for developing your writing and other aspects of your study. A series of talks and workshops cover subjects such as effective note-taking, reading for study, writing an academic essay, giving a presentation, managing your work and doing exams.

The SOAS Library – recently refurbished – has more than 1.5 million items and extensive electronic resources for the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and attracts scholars from all around the world.
We maintain an eduroam enabled network for wireless and wired connectivity. This network is usable by staff and students of SOAS as well as other educational institutions who have eduroam enabled Once you are configured to connect to eduroam you will be able to connect to any other 'eduroam' enabled organisation you visit around the world.
The University Central Institutions Health Service is located close to SOAS, and offers a wealth of experience in dealing with student-related issues such as study strain, stress, fatigue and exam nerves. All students are required to register with a doctor in London, be it the University service or another GP close to your term-time address.
