About

This PhD programme is unique in Portugal and aims at satisfying the need to train people with specialized skills in wine science, viticulture and wine production, in a context where the demand for new standards of quality and productivity by the industry has been growing.

Overview

The Portuguese Catholic University in Porto (College of Biotechnology) (ESB-UCP) and the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) are recognised suppliers of high level education (BSc, MSc, PhD) and training in the agro-food area, particularly in the wine sector.

The educational and scientific background of these universities is duly recognized by the scientific community and industry, and makes these institutions a reference in the field of wine and viticulture science.

The main reasons for the creation of this programme are:

  • The wine sector in Portugal is highly relevant from social, cultural and economic perspectives representing 32% of the country’s agro-food exports.
  • The strong international competition and the increasing demands on quality and food safety, require human resources of the highest level to withstand and potentiate the competitiveness of the Portuguese wine sector.
  • Uniqueness in Portugal. Furthermore, the number of doctoral programmes dedicated to enology and viticulture in Europe is very scarce.

Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences):

  • Ability to conceive, design, adapt and perform original scientific research in enology and viticulture, in accordance with the requirements imposed by the highest standards of academic quality and integrity;
  • Ability to actively participate, when appropriate, on the transfer of technology and knowledge between the university and industry;
  • Explain the main mechanisms of chemical and biological transformations occurring in the grapevine and wine using multi-disciplinary knowledge;
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and products
  • Ability to communicate with peers, academic community, industry and society in general about the areas in which they are experts.

Accreditation

This Program is is fully accredited by A3ES (National Agency for Recognition) which is a member of ENQA (European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education which is an umbrella organization which represents its members at the European level and internationally, especially in political decision making processes and in co-operations with stakeholder organizations.)

Programme Structure

The subject of the thesis can be in the following areas: viticuture, wine science, winemaking technology, wine quality and safety, wine and health, sensorial perception and wine evaluation. Interface themes between viticulture and enology are welcome.

Two other curricular units are mandatory: Thesis Plan and Advanced Training. The Thesis Plan is based on a tutorial system guidance for the preparation of the research proposal. The student should conduct a literature search and synthesize, critically evaluate and integrate the information in a coherent scientific research project (experimental planning and scheduling) to be developed as thesis work. The methodology of the Advanced Training Course is based on the frequency of seminars and study visits.

The Optional Course(s) aims at offering the students an opportunity to take courses with particular relevance to each specific intended profile.

Audience

The audience for this Program is students with background in the following scientific areas: Oenology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Agronomy, Bioengineering, Food Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering or similar areas.
